I have used Slick 50 for many years since I was a mechanic (in the old ROOTES Group days - showing my age) and have always been very impresed with the stuff. Does anyone have the official line from MB and their attitude to Slick 50 as my A Class - A160 is still under warranty.

Have any of yu used it and found that your service ASSYST intervals extend?

Thanks.

I dont know what the MB take is on slick 50, but I thought I had recently read that this product had been discredited in the US. Whilst it has been around as long as I can remember I have never understood why an additive should be required if you use top quality oil.

Not heard about problems in USA. Slick 50 works by coating the metal surface with whatever to fill the minute surface imperfections which are invisible to the naked eye and even microscopes I understand. this reduces friction and increases oil life.

We have even used Slick 50 on lawn mower engines - The last one went about 10 years between oil changes and was sold when 15 years old running as good as new. Most lawn mower engines are knackered after a few years even with regular oil changing.

I treated a Toyota twin cam engine with it and increased fuel economy by about 5% - the oil was still golden after 10,000 miles.

I actually worry that my MB has not got any yet - such is my faith in this proven (to me at any rate) product.

HI

I think the MB official line would be that it should not be used especially if you had a claim regarding engine damage. Regarding the service assyst, I think it is unlikley to make any difference as it takes into account driving time, idle time, short journeys and oil quality, oil quality I think is measured by its opacity

Strange that you should ask this question at this time, my car goes out of warrantee this month just had it's 'A' service so I got MB to put in 4 litres of engine oil, (sump holds 4.5 they charge for 5) and then added 8onzs of 'greaselighting' an engine additive advertised widely on 'Ideal world'
I'm hoping it will make a difference between services even if it?s only small.
My Assyst reading were 15801 for driving & 1726 for idle, the car only did 8500 between services and even then it went -130 days over due for service.
I wanted the service and MOT done together, and so I this time I told the car when it would be serviced instead of allowing it, or rather MB to dictate to me. In twelve months time I let you know if it made a difference.

I used to use Slick-50, but haven't for a long time. It might have helped in the first fill, but thinking about the heat required to obtain the claimed chemical-to-metal bond of the PTFE (teflon) molecules, I realised that all of the slick-50 will be lost during the next oil change. The type of person who is concerned about their engine and who would be inclined to use the product would likely also use good quality (synthetic) oils, changed regulary, and also drive with more regard to the engine. I think these are the factors which increase engine life and not these products such as Slick-50.

"The use of an engine oil additive is not recommended, either by Mobil or by virtually any vehicle manufacturer. In fact, it may void your new-car warranty.

Finally, you may have seen the commercial where two engines are allowed to run without any oil in them and the one which had the special oil additive keeps on ticking after the other engine has conked out. This may be appealing to the car owner who never changes his or her oil or who runs his or her car without oil, but it should be of little interest to the person who knows how to take care of their automobile. Used it in my 1982 BMW 318i from 40,000 when I bought it. The car was written off at 190,000 by an HGV, with the engine never having needed any bottom or top-end work, surviving with 3,000 mile interval oil and filter changes, It sounded the same when I bade it farewell as when I bought it.
I think it works, and I've used it in my C280 as well, but as one of you said, I fall into the look after your car variety of motorist.
