Had MOT done today. Have slight play on both from wheel bearings.

Is the cheap to rectify? Do Mercedes look at this and repair when servicing?

Thanks

Luke

Probably same set up as my Clk , which has adjustable front wheel bearings , so I would guess under an hours work for a garage . Provided they are not too worn

The guy said there wasn't much in it.

Do you know if mercedes tighten them as part of a service or is that generally extra?

Been told it's not the same setup. They can't be "tightened" need replacing

Was told by an independent mechanic that they need to be changed and can't be tightened

They can be tightened...and don't leave it until your next service. You can do it yourself...it's easy. You tube is your friend.

Piece of cake. It won't take you long. Ignore the advice from your mechanic because he is telling you lies and he is looking to take you for a ride.

Is it a home mechanic job? I had always understood the tolerances to be fine so you'd need a gauge of some sort to ensure you don't overtighten.

It was just a mechanic on a FB who advised me. Not looking for work.

Different manufacturers do it different ways. Some you torque up to **ftlbs & then back off to the next castleation. Other makers just have a bearing that is part of the hub & there's no adjustment, you just tighten to FTftlbs

Repack with grease and reset comfortable 1/2 hour for garage.
1 hour includes tea, biscuit and discussion of world affairs.

The front wheel bearings are taper roller, and Mercedes have a simple and accurate adjusting setup for them.

Once the wheel is off and the centre protective cap is removed (screwdriver pops this off) you will see a clamp which is locked in place with a hex-headed setscrew. Loosen this with an allen key and the clamp will be free to turn. Rotate until you feel the bearing begin to tighten up (slight increase in turning resistance), then back the clamp off a fraction, and you have it. Repack with grease and tighten the setscrew, refit the protective cap.

Both front wheels can be done in less than half an hour total.
Hope that's a help.

It was just someone online. Why ignore the advice?

Because it's incorrect.
As the subsequent posts say, a really quick, easy job to lube and adjust them.

Might have a go at that then as I have a slight play on mine.

Will lith-moly grease do, do I need a gun to get it in?
