slk 171 -amg aerial replacement

Dear all,

the wire aerial can be simply replaced , after reading much on benzworld and other sites - it started to sound a nitemare -- however took the simple & effective root.

Purhcase from MB Swindon an sl55 aerial they ordered it colour matched to my slk 55. Then got the paint guy who does bumper scrtach repairs etc for MBswindon to paint the base aerial mount & match to aerial.The aerial screws straight on , looks so much better than the wire coat hanger . Cost £85.00 for parts & the paint job.

MB couldnt find the part number or the part for the aerial base part which attaches to the wing -- if you could you may get an even better more "original"job - but for now , all done & radio works fine & nowt else affected either.

so no buying a brabus kit , or finding hard to find german or usa market parts.

Aerial replacement

I have a 1992 SL300. The electric aerial is quite noisy at speed. I am thinking of changing it for the short fixed type. Can I do this with ease?

Would the SL55 aerial be the same as a SL 500 aerail ? i`m gussing it would be but just thought i would ask you.
Like i said before i have the SL500 aerial on my SLK and it fits and screws down fine but radio reception is very poor. I have read this on a US merc site that you get this problem if you use a SL aerail !
Do you still pick up radio Stations as strong as you did with the orignal aerail ?
I have attached a photo of mine .

Some cars,( I will check the SL out) have a amp to compensate for the long cable run.

Many people do not like the aerial up when they are using CD it is possible to disarm this function on terminal 5 of the euro connector, and add aswitch.
Some cars do this

Hello djangry - readio reception is impaired - not greatly - certainly useable. U can get an additional wiring kit to sort that glitch - but i am not to fussed . The base of mine has been painted to match the aerial , sl55 & sl5oo same aerial , well mine off my sl55 fits my business partners sl500 and works fine. the base painting cost me £50.00- looks fine.

the sl55 still beats the slk55 although getting used to it a bit more.

My SL aerial fits great but radio reception is almost lost all together
Another Question , Do you have Sat Nav Comand ? The other day while using the sat nav with the SL aerail it went crazy saying i was of road ...... soon as i put the "wip" aerail back on its was fine ! Does any one know if the Wip Aerial has anything to do with the GPS on the car?

wow , christ, didnt notice that happen on mine at all, yep got command etc etc , never done that at all............

have u done any other mods on the slk ?? wondering about a carbon fibre interior trim kit .....but wondering about quality etc etc.

anyhow if i find the article & info about the additional wiring kit to boost the radio reception will send along to you -- check out benzworld if you havent already ! good info site.

No other mods to the car , shes at the Merc Garage as we speak and i`ve asked them to look at the Sat Nav - I have checked out Benzworld , people seem to say the same about the SL aerail not working very well , you must be the lucky one . . a few people on there have fitted a R170 aerail and said it works fine , its much smaller than the "WIP aerail " .. Only problem here is that the UK R170 never had an aerail at all .. so i`m guessing that was just a US thing !!!????**
Would be intrested in the additional wiring kit , is it easy to fit/where would i get it from / how much ect..? Anyone fitted it ?

There is a small aerial for sale on E-bay , but i read on Benzworld that some guy brought one and it does not work either !!!!

Why O why did Merc not make the aerial nice looking as on the SL.....

Got the car back from Merc today , the sat Nav problem was due a new DVD upgrade , so thats all sorted.
Also got the base of the aerial sprayed (photo attached)
Just need to get the wiring kit anyone know where to get one ?

hello scott will hunt down that article , bit of a job though , u got to connect something to the back bumper etc etc..... hey your aerial looks a snap for mine !!! ......also is yours an amg ?? as in the usa on the command you can do a lot more customising to the car itself etc ....again all on/in benzworld.....

like i say will hunt that article down etc.........
