Hi.
Someone recently told me that the engines on both these cars are the same, it is just the size of the supercharger that is different.

Can someone confirm if this is true, because that sounds like a fairly cost effective upgrade if it is.

I know Mercedes, like BMW, almost 'mis-badges' some of its cars to reflect the power level rather than the actual cc of the engine, so it is feasible.

Cheers in advance,
Dan.

No not the 230 & 200.

But the C-Class C200k and C180k are the same 1.8.
The C280cdi and C320cdi have both now have got 3L V6 engines
The new SLK200 is a 1.8 engine

Thanks for the reply.
So they are different size engines then?

Thing is on some specs I have seen from magazines the engine sizes are quoted as the same ccs but the outputs are different.

I was told it was on the post 2000 facelift ones that the engine sizes were the same, but on say a 1998 SLK, it actually had a 2.3 litre engine.

Anyone have any definitive specs?

Cheers,
Dan.

A 1998 SLK is 2298cc (info off the V5).

My understanding is that in the UK all cars from launch until the facelift in 2000 were SLK230 autos, just this one engine, power output is 193 bhp.

The SLK owners manual technical data booklet (1996) lists three cars 200, 200 Kompressor and 230 Kompressor. It states that the 200K is only for sale in Italy, Portugal and Greece. The 200 engine is 136 bhp and the 200k is 192 bhp. The 200k engine is only listed as manual. This booklet specifically states that it is printed prior to the model release, so I suppose it is possible that the 200 and 200K never actually made it to the showrooms.

I personally find it very confusing the way MB (and BMW) no longer use the numbers to represent the engine size - why is a 523 not called a 525? why has a 540 only got a four litre engine? At least BMW under sell themselves, why should a new SLK 200 not be honest and called an SLK 180? Never mind, I will go and have a burn around the block in my sons Ford Ka, with the 16V and Turbo badges on the back, nobody will know its only 1300cc.

Mark.
