My wife is having problems with the ECU. The left indicator came on and stayed on even after the fuses had been removed. MB garage said that water had leaked into the boot and shorted out the contacts/connector on the ECU causing the fault. They did a temporary repair and said we needed a new ECU (£1000). The fault has re-occurred after a few months but I CANNOT FIND THE ECU ???
Can anyone help or offer any advise ??
Thanks

I cant give you a fast answer, but I can tell you this;
1. I have never seen an MB with the ECU in the boot.
2. The ECU contols the engine and the indicators are not included in its role.
3. I would take the car to a decent indipendent as this sounds like these people dont know what they are talking about.
4. Havent had the time to check out your model, but some models do have a lighting module in the boot and this may be what they were refering to, and not the ECU. But even here, 1,000 does sound a little high.

Please stop posting this rubbish eric on cars that you have never seen and on subjects that you appear to know nothing about

ECU is the Engine Control Unit and SAM is the Signal Acquasition Module. There is a huge differnce between the two and their functions. And no I not playing games, simply talking sense and also im not critisising someone. Whish is all you do.:shock:

Do not make yourself look more stupid are you saying that the gearbox ECU is an engine ECU, or that the hard or soft top module ECU is not one

Any electronic device that contains semiconductors is an ECU.

I feel so sad the way that you are allowed to mess threads up. The guy that started the thread was told by MB the it was the ECU in the trunk, I did not have any problem in sorting that out for him and have successfully dealt with 20 of them, you come along and mess it all up.

Tell you what why dont you tell the guy whats wrong with his car.

OK its the lighting module and it is located in the boot, behind the side panelling. You have a european car so cant give you the exact location, be it right or left in the boot. On asian and american models its behind the right hand side of the boot and its a black unit (plastic cover) You have to pull the plastic plugs from the trim to remove the panel. And Malcolm is correct about the water ingress bit. I just wanted to explain the difference between the types of units. Its behind the trim or cover and you have to remove the cover.

Thanks for that. I have tried to get the right boot trim off but the roof mechanism is in the way. I have found two units low down on the right which I thought were contols/compressor for the roof system. So I am still no nearer knowing where the unit is, sorry.
