SLK 230 Kompressor R170 1999
Hi All,

SLK 230 Kompressor Auto, R170, 1999 (V), 97k.

I've had the K40 relay soldered every single solder, cleaned the MAF (it was oily), cleaned the crank sensor, cleaned air flap sensor. Car had just been serviced new air filter, plugs, oil & coolant.

The problem I have is once driving it won't kick down & while trying to boot it, it just splutters like the gases can't escape through the cat making a splutter popping sound around 3000 rpm. The kompressor kicks in at 2000 rpm as normal. Car will sometimes just cut out whilst at idle. I've tried driving without the MAF plugged in, sometimes works but the Kompressor doesn't with that unplugged. I've also tried with the air flap unplugged & both at the same time.

Any help & advice would be much appreciated.

The MAF could be worn out, unplug it and try the car.

Thanks for your reply Malcolm.

I've tried it without the MAF plugged in all that happens is the fan kicks in straight away & the kompressor doesn't kick in. It also has cut out when the MAF is unplugged.

It looks like it could do with a STAR read out, the MAF could still be faulty, STAR should say.

Is the B1235 the same as P1235 - Fuel pump control out of range?

Is it worth changing the lamda sensor?

Never known one to fail, were the codes read before you unplugged the MAF

No they weren't

What happened was the car started kangerooing after I'd just come of a roundabout, managed to get it to a lay-by it then cut out on me. Tried to start it again straight after & it cut out straight away. Left it for 30mins managed to start it again but it spluttered on me again within a mile. Left it for 3 hrs & got a lift home. Brother then said lets go get it & I'll have a quick look, he unplugged the air flap sensor & it started great & drove home great. It then drove for the next two days & boooom conked out on me. I then unplugged the MAF but it still wouldn't start. I left it again for 30 mins but still it didn't start, tried plugging the air flap in with the MAF out, still didn't start. I then unplugged both & took the battery off for 1hr. It started & I managed to get it home. I then did the fault test & never managed to get it off the drive.

Do you have the means to clear fault codes on your device, this needs to be done and a new check on fault codes done again

The little machine I used did have a reset button but it didn't clear them unfortunately. I've not tried it since cleaning the MAF though

If the codes will not clear they are current and all pointing towards the MAF, when they have failed, cleaning does not help.

You were spot on Malcolm as per usual :D

The new Bosch MAF has just been fitted & it works spot on. Did another code read ZERO. Problem fixed!!

Just on another point when I took the old cleaned up MAF off again I looked in it & it was covered in little droplets of water which were dirty in colour as if mixed with oil or dirt. Any suggestions what that could be?

Many thanks

Hard to say, if the engine was miss firing it could have just blown something back from the manifold.

So pleased its all good now.
