SLK 230 (r170) Seat Height Adjustment Problem

Good evening chaps.

Just acquired a 1999 SLK 230 and have spent all day cleaning and sorting - as you do when you get a new one!.

When I try to adjust the height of the seats (either driver or pax) by pulling or pushing on the levers at the side of the seats, nothing happens. Am I missing a trick here? Or, is it a linkage problem or something?

The seats both move beautifuly on their runners , backwards and forwards but the height adjustment doesn't happen.

I'd be grateful for any words of wisdom and if I am being dumb, I apologise

Many thanks

Apologies (must be that I am used to my E320cdi and letting the electrics do it for me)

Thanks

Steve

Hi Malcolm

No need to apologise but thanks for taking the time. No worries and anyway, my question probably seemed so silly that it didn't warrant a reply. However, I must say that I am very pleased with the SLK although it is a little underwhelming when compared with my E320 when going for a 'blast'. That's what a difference 900cc makes I suppose. Almost wish I'd gone for the bigger SLK now. Anyway I've no doubt I'll be back to the forum with another (more meaningful) question quite soon.

Thanks again

Seat Height Adjustment - Seat Won't Move

Hi everyone,

I bought my 1999 SLK 230 a few days ago and already love it. I don't know much about these cars yet but am looking forward to finding out more. I wanted a convertible 2-seater and was looking at MG TF's as I already own a MG ZT but liked the better build quality of the SLK.

I'm having the same problem that Stevitee had when he first got his car. I just cannot seem to get the seat to lower. I'm sitting far too high at the moment and my head is nearly touching the roof and I'm only small, about 5'4".

Stevitee says he eventually found how to make the seat go down but doesn't say how he did it! Can anyone offer some advice please?

Thanks!

SLK230 R170 Intermittant Electric Seat Fault

I have a problem with the electric seat adjustment in my SLK230
Intermittantly they dont work
Big issue as my wife has drivers seat fully forward and I have it fully back and cant get into the car if she has been using it
Fault is with both seats and all adjustments
Sometimes they work ok
Sometimes they dont work until the engine has been running for 10 - 15 min or more
Sometimes they work if I close the door and lock car then unlock it with the remote.
Sometimes with ignition on somtimes with ignition off
My local Mercedes specialist couldnt make it go wrong!
I wondered if the battery was not providing enough output until engine running but battery was tested and found to be ok!
Help would be appreciated otherwise we will have to have his and her SLKs!

There is a relay for this where the contacts go intermittent, it stops both seats from working when bad, its a convenience relay from memory.

If its a manual adjuster, you pull the height adjustment lever up, then press down, or pull up on the seat itself with your body.

Its held up by a gas strut and a spring. Took me a while to figure it out as well, I thought it was a ratchet adjuster.

As Malcolm says if this is the same as a 202 then there is a convenience relay in the boot and it will be fitted in close proximity to the rear fuse box (202 comparision), the relay won,t look anything special, about the same size as afuel pump relay, less than £30 from MB.
For info the electric seat function via. the relay will work when the ignition is on and when the key is out of the ignition with either of the doors open as the relay coil is switched from the interior light circuit (in the case of the 202 straight from the actual door switch, -ve switching).

The R170 seat adjustment relay is up behind the dash....

This shows it in an LHD car - RHD is opposite hand. As the cars get older, intermittent operation is a common problem. If you dismantle the relay the fault is sometimes obvious as a dry solder joint which is easily redone.
