This may well be a simple question..
BUT
How many spark plugs are fitted to a 51 plate slk 320...????
It looks like these 12 .??? Am i correct.. Are there 2 plugs per cylinder.???

Also how do you get the plug leads off them without doing terminal damage.???

Yes - its a twin spark, so 12 pricey non-copper plugs required.
The leads are VERY tight, but you just have to twist, rock and tug on the suppressor caps. Also ensure they CLIP home again when you put them back. I found around 15 stone of pressure jumping up and down on them did the trick!
There is a bar inside that clips into the ridge on the plug pin and its been there for years so it's not eager to shift. Also once off, check the condition of the inside of the cap and general condition of the lead. I've had problems with the leads.

Yes it is twelve. The original spark plugs in my V6 were Beru with the Mercedes star but I find the car runs better with the Bosch plugs which are a slightly different design. The Bosch plugs have a spike as a centre electrode, the Berus have a cylindrical post. I'm not sure how much room there is in an SLK between the plugs and the inner wing. The W202 C class is almost impossibly tight, and the leads are a b****r to remove whereas the SL320 has loads of space. In the C you have to remove the coil packs which isn't difficult to get at the leads. Just make sure that you number them correctly as there are two different length leads in varying positions. The coil packs are marked leads A and B as are the plug holes so you get the leads back on in the correct position. Make sure you don't pull the leads off by the lead, only pull on the plug cover. You may break the ceramic off the end of the plug but you can still unscrew them. Mercedes have a special tool for removeing the leads but an open ended 17mm spanner fits over the lip on the end of the plug lead and allows you to lever them off. Not a pleasant job and if you have to remove the coil packs will take you about three hours!

If you remove the leads from the coil packs, be careful when you refit them. It is easy to miss the central pin, and damage the lead.

Thanks folks.
My father had a E280 many moons ago + that was a right pig to get the leads off. Numerous times "we" damaged the lead...

It looks like Merc havnt resolved the lead problem...Typical....

Yes ive found out to my expense that there are 12 plugs.. at aprox £4 each...Euro car parts....
And space looks tight near the inner wings...

Anybody know if this special merc tool is available to buy...?? if so how much....????
It might just save somebody some £££ on replacing leads.....

I'm a bit suspicous at plugs @ £4 ea - I paid over twice that from sparkplugs.co.uk. (and they were discounted). Make sure they are the correct (60k miles) ones.

MB say that a spanner using the side of the top as a fulrum point is the best thing to remove the leads.

Excellent "how to guide" just after ive done mine...

I actuall used some copper slip grease to help lube up the plug leads , so "hopefully" theyl come off easier next time...But that might be in a few years time....;)
