slk auto only goes in 1st and reverse

i have a slk 230 1999 automatic that is only driving in 1st and reverse,someone advised that i need a new box[thanks for input by the way],but is there no other solution,desperate,thanks

is it harsh when selecting gear?, if so its gone into limp home mode, get the faults checked, could be speed sensor in the conductor plate.

I'd suggest a gearbox oil and filter change before you do anything and go from there.

Wont do any good, its an electrical problem, but would change them when rectifying the problem.
