Hello there!

New to the forum, and diving straight in with a couple of questions - hope that's ok?

I've got a 98 SLK runaround that's been a trusty second car for the last four years. My local dealer has just informed me at the last (60,000 mile) service that I need new discs and pads, and I was just looking for some advice really before I book it in. What sort of cost should I be looking at, and does this sound about right for the age of the car? (I have got a fairly heavy right foot!).

Also - I've spent a bit on making the car look a bit prettier recently (colour coding all round and some nice new AMG alloys), and was thinking about adding some nice Mercedes Benz kickplates for the door sills. Has anyone got any idea of where I might buy some from? I believe you can get illuminated ones, but I'm not really fussy.

All help much appreciated, and thanks for reading!

Phil

Hi phils

At 60k miles I would guess that it is on its second set of disc's anyway. they normaly last aboyt 30-40 K on the slk and even as litle as 15K on the S class . cost depends on engine size but MB discs are generally very good value and not expensive. labour wise you should be talking about 2.5 hours

Thanks for your help :)

Had my main dealer sort the pads and discs, for a very reasonable (I think!) £240 inclusive. Managed to pick up some MB kickplates from Euro Car Parts too, which look lovely on the car! I'm sure I've not replaced the discs before, so I guess I've had my moneys worth out of the 60K miles it's done!

The down side, is my car has developed an annoying squeak when driven over any bumps. The dealer traced it to a 'front exhaust bracket' missing from the car. Now MB don't actually sell just the bracket on its own - so I can replace the front exhaust if I like.. at a cost of £571+vat.

I've decided to live with the squeak.

If you go to somewhere like Euro Car Parts, they will sell an Exhaust Fitting Kit. This might contain the bracket your after. This kit is usuallysold with an exhaust system, but can be bought on its own for about 5 or 10 quid....

Might be worth a go...

Great idea! Thanks for that! There's a Euro Car Parts not five minutes up the road from me, so I'll give it a crack.

Thanks again.
