I have done 42 now to date, and a little bit better than the £625 for a new one:D

After trying most of the advice given I had to concede defeat and hand the car to the garage due to a lack of time. Thankfully they were brilliant, diagnosing a loose earth and getting it fixed the same day despite originally saying they only had time to have a look at it. Thanks again for all the help though, very much appreciated.

I replaced a relay in one of these today Malcolm - took me ages!

May I ask, how do you de-solder the old ones?
Just a solder sucker?

Any tips warmly welcomed.

Cheers.

I have spare relays, but only ever changed one.

How do you do it, well first you weigh the job up, some pins are on double sided tracks, desolder the two thin track first, then the large ones and slowly go round and round levering up the relay a tiny amount as you go. In all 15 mins max to replace.

Its one of those jobs that I have done 50 thousand times and you just do it thinking about sex or what ever turns you on :D

Yes hand pumps, all different sizes, a tip for these things, lubricate the washer in the pump and they suck 100 times better,,, often one has to apply new solder to a joint to be able to suck the solder out

Thanks Malcolm, useful tips there.

I too find you can often reface the contacts, but this car with 213,00 miles (most I ever saw on a W170!) was beyond that.

Hi Malcolm,

I am suffering from the same intermittent issue on my 1998 R170, are you still able to fix these units? It's definitely the version with the three relays. I don't have PMs yet so can't message you directly.

Kind Regards,

Tony

Hi Malcolm. I appreciate its a while since the last post on this thread but my wife has a nice low mileage 1999 v reg SLK which has this problem. I can remove the box. Can you repair it please. Please email me contact details if you still have the spare relays. Many thanks.

That's great Malcolm I'm very pleased you can still assist. Do you think once I've removed the unit, I should try cleaning up the contacts and applying some non drying switch cleaner first or would I be well advised to send the unit to you without my own attempt to clean it up?

If so I'd need your contact details and I'm not sure what the forum rules are for communicating by email.

It is impossible for me to know how well anyone one else can do this, you have to be used to handling these things.

You are welcome to send the unit and my price is still the same, I can Email you my address.

Televison - as always, your own personal reputation PRECEDES you... Your past history of being banned from a NUMBER of PUBLIC FORUMS is of your own doing...

Even after your ENFORCED DEPARTURE (which you claim was on your own accord according to your posting here), NO ONE including myself ever discussed/criticised you on the FORUM, didnt want to raise the matter... WE WANTED TO LET SLEEPING DOGS LIE... However, you have taken EVERY ruddy opportunity to poke and shove at us...

By all means HELP the whole world - no one will berate you for it... BUT please dont behave like a CHILD, grow up & take it on the chin like an ADULT for your actions... and we will all go on our merry way... BUT knowing you, you will always want to have the last word and spoil it for all...
Take him off mods, dont know how this got through .
