SLK issues?

I am just about to buy a '97 SLK to replace my '98 E200. Apart from the rust -which was dealt with very well indeed by MB in Blackpool - the E200 was/is absolutely fine. I just wanted to change and the SLK is virtually the only "sports car" which will accomodate me comfortably . Am I doing the right thing? My local garage warns me that the SLK engine is showing a slight loss of engine oil, and there do not appear to be any leaks. Is there anyone out there with experience - good as well as bad - of the early SLKs?

We have had a 97 SLK for 14 months, done around 10k in that time taking it to around 48K now.

In that time we have had a gearbox service (about £200) brought on by a gearbox oil leak, 2 new rear lights both the result of the brake light fitting melting (£60 each and 2 minutes to fit) and a new battery. I do the standard servicing myself and have changed the oil every 3k.

Would I recommend the SLK, yes 100%. You do have to be aware that the car is 8 years old and it has probably been driven hard! Proof of careful maintenenace is important, I dont personally think MB history is important but you do need to be sure that it has been looked after. Finally the roof. Tales on here suggest that a dealer will want upto £3k to fix a failed roof, so make sure it works perfectly before buying.

welcome to the chosen few.

Mark.

SLK Ownership

Just sold a SLK 230 'S' reg. Owned it for 16 months. 20000 miles covered in that time with a smile on my face every mile. Only cost was MB servicing and it was less than for my previous Mazda MX5. Now own an SLK 320. Fuel consumption on both has been about 27/8 mpg country roads and town, 30/34 on long, fast trips. Do watch for the roof on early models and I have heard of transmission leaks and failed air con if fitted.
