Had a CLC a couple of years but traded in for GLA. Didn’t like the GLA , thought it had no turning circle and was let down by Mercedes dealership who advised that my second hand one year old GLA could have front parking sensors retrofitted, which they then decided couldn’t. Anyway decided I’d buy a little SLK as my run around, so could leave driving of the GLA to my husband. Bought a 2004 SLK , lowish mileage and loving it. Traded the GLA in for a 2011 ML350, it’s a big car but sooo much nicer than the GLA., even though I now know it’s a money pit for road tax ( diesel).

Thanks! That’s good to hear. I’ve had it checked by Mercedes and all they can report is that disc brakes and pads need changing. It’s only done just over 66000 so hardly run in! Such a fun car.

Hi and welcome

The car will; have pad warning sensors on so get a second opinion on that, MB (and most other dealers) are well known for replacing early, good money maker

As JBell says , main dealers love selling brake parts . If you look at the pads yourself , you can see how much is remaining . If it passes the MOT as well then that's another check .

Hi Wighty! Thanks for the reply, you are so right! Took it to an independent garage yesterday and they said the same thing..... "come back next year when they need replacing"!!

IIRC Halfords have a "pads for life" offer that might be worth a look. Don't know if it also covers discs, but if they fit replacement pads for you, then as long as you won the car any further pad replcements are free!

Make sure you get the underside Waxoyled, or undersealed. This model is loved by the rust bug.
I enjoyed ownership of one for several years, until the bug took it away (actually failed Mot on underside rust, although the paintwork was excellent).

Hate to hear of a good car dying too soon! Fun, they certainly are.

I thought by 2004 the pain/rust problem had been sorted? 2001 was the real problem year.

I think you're right.
But as I understand it, the production mods that kept the rust bug at bay were introduced in the third quarter of 2004. A car road-registered in the UK during 2004 is quite likely to have been manufactured before that changeover date.

I think there were two issues here, first the paint problem of 2001. Second the galvanising which I think as you said came in late 2004.
My wife had a 2004 SLK200K 171 version, sold in 2012 with no rust at all. I can't say I have seen any 171's with rust.
The last of the 170's were sold in early in 2004, I have seen rust on those.
