OK boys N girls, went out ordered my chrome SLK gearshift surround from the stealership yesterday, paid £5.02........picked it up today and heh presto..........doesn't fit!!!!!

So your thinking I'm a total cabbage, well I kid you not, the gearshift on my 2K 240 Sport W202 is larger and also it is set out different as my Sport / Winter switch is on the left of the gearshift and not the right also the gate design is totally different to the pic here....

So I have a Benz bagged chrome gearshift surround for a pre 2K W202 if anyone wants one...... only 1 hour old!!!!

maybe MB fitted the w210 e-class gearshift setup to the last of the w202s.  The w210 frame is larger than the pre 2k w202 frame.  I reckon you should go to the stealership and measure up the shiftgate/frame on a w210.  Then report your findings for us  .

Greg , on the black trim you take off , there should be a part number up one side on the bottom of the trim . Post the part number of the black trim and ill see if its the same as mine.

OK guys I knew you wouldn't believe me.....

No its not just a tight fit......its a good 10mm if not more too small.

My gate is nothing like Vins or Shudes, the travel path is more or less straight and nothing like the scalextric track shape you guys have...

And finally I only have P  R  N  D.  oh and also there is no part number on the existing black part....

I think Shude may be right saying that I have the E setup maybe...will have to look at one at work...

Anyone want this d*amn
part????

Guys

There seems to be a great deal of confusion here...

It appears that Greg has got the new gearbox set up with the tiptronic function.

Greg.. when you have the gear shift in D are you able to move left and right to change from D to 1 and 1 to D?

If so, you have the tiptronic function. The gear valley will be shorter than Jason's because he has the old gearbox set up.

What you need is the Shift Surround from the facelift SLK, they also have the tiptronic gearbox. At a guess I bet you've ordered the prefacelift model Shift Surround.

Hope this helps

I think I've missed the point here.

I also noticed that the chrome SLK air-con dial surrounds fit the W202.

I think I lost it when I went out and bought the SLK to remove the parts....

Here are some images of my old black trim i have removed . The first drawing shows the dimentions in millimetres and the second the location of the part number and the part number itself.

The W202 with the tip box does not come with the e class gearbox unless it is some freak of nature thing. Having owned one of the last w202's in i can verify this.

How do the dimentions compare with your one Greg?

the sad thing is that I couldn't find a part number on my old plastic frame, so we can't compare them.  That's the second part I've replaced on my car that's not had a part number - the other being the entrance light cavitiy cover on the underside of the doors.

You will easily sell that chrome frame to someone at the next gtg, lots of people with shamefully stock w202s around ;)

Yes indeedy Sameer, I do have the tip function from left to right in the drive position....

So R u sure that the facelift SLK surround will fit as I dont want a collection of these mate...mind you I could sell them to Pat Butcher as ear-rings!!!!

Both Vinny and Shude owe me a beer then for giving me wrong info then........           ;-))

What I did do today is fit it with no problems on my mates C280 Sport, his is a 98 / R..

So I think we agree I have a 202 made up from all models of the Benz range......  what we call a Friday car!!!

Cheers

All 202s are made from bits and pieces, your door mirrors are w210 ones, pull the lid off and check the part number, don't forget the w202 has been around since 1992 and the w210 didn't come into existence until late 1995...  In fact most of the cars have shared components.  Here's a scary thing: check your warning triangle in the boot, it has a 203 part number, that's the NEW c-class, and those triangles were fitted to w202s from 1997+.  I find it all quite fascinating, and quite regularly entertain (bore) my family and friends with part number stories...
