I don't know.Basically he wants one and all the ones he has looked at are autos but his wife wants a manual. She thinks autos are for old men.She is a bit dense. He is looking to spend around 17 big ones.

Yes a manual was available and the 320 engine is particularly suited to it.
Tell them to try the auto first though.

Would this be the old shape or the new shape?

A friend of mine had the 230 kompressor with 6 speed manual - I was very impressed, It suited the engine well and the change was pretty good.

I think for that money you'd be looking at a 2003 model year model, and depending on the mileage, either a 200, 230 or 320 I think. Depends if running costs are an issue. If not, the 320 would be the one to go for I should think. I'd also suggest a FMBSH for residual if nothing else, and from a franchised dealer as you have the piece of mind of a warranty etc. If you know your onions you can get just a good deal from there as any independent. If you see one you fancy, make sure you're not paying too much and check (assuming you haven't got a Cap black book) Glass's guide or Parkers to check the value. You can check Glass's free via the Vauxhall website.

We had a W170 200 Komp with a manual box. Worst thing I ever did. Once you were in third and above, the car was fine, but almost impossible to drive smoothly from stopped. Now have a W171 350 with an auto box - what a difference! To be fair, I'm told that the W171 manual is much better, but most MB dealers, if they're truthful, will tell you that the earlier model manual boxes/clutches are dreadful.

We have the new Slk with a 6 speed manual, first gear is still pretty dreadful as it is too short geared, alsmost not neaded at all but it is a very good short throw easy to change and smooth in all the rest !
