Thinking of changing the 15inch wheels on my R170 for something slightly bigger. Any one any advice? :) If i fit 18 inch wheels will they catch the front wings when you turn a corner and go over a bump? Any advice greatfully recieved.

SLK wheels

I wouldn't go for anything bigger than 17" on the SLK. We had the 5 spoke 17" 45/245 and 225/45 AMG alloys on ours (car wrecked last week by a lad in a Corsa trying to overtake me whilst I was turning right! - so its the R170 v R171 v SL debate time) and I think anything over that would make it virtually undriveable.

It's a harsh enough ride with the larger wheels and can also be a tad twitchy with a tendency to follow any 'tramlines' in the road surface.

SLK Wheels

My SLK 230 has the full AMG factory fitted body kit with the 17" AMG wheels, looks really good. Was thinking of changing the wheels to 16" fitted with 205/55 and 205/50 as this may give a more comfortable ride. Looking for a set of alloys simular to what was origionally fitted to the SLK up to 2000 but with 5 bars instead of 7. Have seen a few fitted to the facelift model approx 2002/3.Any comments guys?

Hi, I'm Running 18's 8.5 and 9.5 with 225 and 255 tyres both with et30 offset, they don,t rub at all and the ride is only slightly harder

I bought my SLK320 fitted with 18"s wearing 225/40's up front and 245/40's on the rear.

The ride was certainly harsh and the tendency to 'tramline' diabolical.

I reverted to the original fitment of 205/55 - 16 on the front and 225/50 - 16 at the rear - and transformed the car! no tramlining and a softer ride.

I suspect 17"s on an SLK (R170) are an acceptable compromise of comfort and looks, but in my experience 18 is an inch too far!
