slk230 w reg very rusty engine protector

Hi just bought w reg slk230 Kompressor
love this car but just looking more closely the engine protector underneath is very very rusty to the point that the edges are breaking off in my hand!
Why?
The rest of car in mint condition with full Merc history
Anyone else seen this?
Does it come off easy enough to sort out

You have the very rare option of a steel undertray. They ALL rust.

I have painted one before for a customer with black hammerite and it came up lovely.

I would check the price of a new steel and plastic version and see what you think, if its only the edges then paint it as BlackC55 did
