Hi I'm new to this forum.
I'm about to put a deposit on one these and wanted to know who owns one on here and your thoughts on it (pro's & con's) and anything to look for before I commit.

The test drive this afternoon just blew me away :D
thanks!

Finally shook hands with the deal of £18750 for 2001 (51reg) with all the usual AMG spec, 37000 miles. The insurance quote came out better than I expected at £1068, 32 years of age an no no-claims bonus (due to being my second car). Can't wait to take delivery of it next week :D

Congratulations. AMG=lots of fun. I'm on my second C43 and there several more on the site plus an SLK 55 and at least one E55. I think there's a C32 somewhere but not positive

Something I should have done, when you take out a second policy put the most expensive car to insure on that , and the cheaper car on the new policy.

Some companies (Direct Line is one, I think) will mirror your NCD across 2 policies.
Liverpool Victoria (aka Frizzell) and others, will do multi-car policies.

Tried that already but due to my other car been highly modified only Adrian Flux will touch it and give me a reasonable quote for the AMG.

Just had a look on Direct Line and they give 10% so it depends on what they charge in the first place.

err...be a bit careful here - I *think* it's Admiral who don't cover options. If the car is stolen or written off then they only pay out based on a standard version of the car.

OK, not too bad with an SL as most of it is standard other than glass roof and masterbaiting seats.

Thanks I will double check.

Thats not a bad quote. My SLK55 fully comp with full NCB is £774! so it would be over £1500 without any. i realise mine is newer, but it puts it into context. well done.
I was out in a 320SLK couple or 3 weeks ago and that was rapide enough. the AMG spec will be a monster i should think. They have a lot bigger boot that the new ones.

My policy is limited to only 5000miles a year, not a problem for me as a weekend runaround.

Congratulations on your purchase Wil. I have had an SLK32 for about a year and they are fantastic cars and superb value for money at less than 50% of new cost now. There were only 271 cars officially imported to the UK from 2001 to 2004 and good ones will undoubtedly become classics in the years to come.

Faults are very few and far between. When next in for service you should check that a couple of recalls have been done (not urgent). One potential fault peculiar to this model is premature failure of the intercooler pump or blowing of its dedicated fuse. This pump supplies water to help cool the supercharger. This fault will not manifest itself at outside air tempertures less than about 25 deg C. Over 25 deg C if you try to accelerate hard, the supercharger will cut in momentarily and then the ignition will deliberately retard and significant power will be lost to reduce the possibility of overheating the supercharger.

Thanks I will certainly check these within my 3 months warranty period.
Did'nt realise so little were imported to the UK, no wonder why I hardly ever come across one of these on the road, makes me feel even more proud owning one.

Common as muck, mate. There are were only 50 C43 Estates imported :)

Only joking. But whenever I see a C43 estate (apart from mine I have only ever seen 2) or a saloon (more common - there were 350) I find my head swivelling.

My wife thinks it's sad but like you say they are rare which I think is quite cool.

Hi All.
I bought an '02 SLK 32 in June this year. Fantastic car! Absolutely love it.
The exclusivity thing is one of the best bits about owning it, as well as the stellar performance of course! :D
The car was very tidy when I picked it up but I love sorting all the little things (polish this, align that a little better, replace that bit of trim etc) that add up to make it an absolutely A1 example.
Anyway, it would seem we are a pretty exclusive club. :p
Later,
Dan.

Nice one Dan.
I'm like you, a perfectionist, I have'nt stop doing my own repairs on minor niggles and tweaks etc. not that it was'nt in A1 condition in the first place and of course cleaning the car more often than I see my misses :p and it just comes out of the garage once a week...lol
Definately the best car I have owned by far in terms of 2nd hand value for money and the supercar like performance.

Hi Wil.
Likewise. This car goes like no other I have driven and I have driven a few high powered beasts in my time.
I had a C70 T5 that had an upgraded turbo and a remap with a stainless cat back exhaust before this. It was mapped to approx 320+BHP, but it had nothing like this cars massive power band.
that is probably down to it being turbocharged instead of supercharged and weighing more, but its mid range was superb, akin to the 32, but it didn't give anything like the same actual performance, in that if you really had some fun, the turbo got hot and the ECU reigned it back in.
Superchargers don't have the temp issues that turbos have.
One thing that hints at the 32's performance is the massive brakes. The rear brakes are as big as the front brakes were on my C70!!

I am thinking of getting a stainless performance exhaust for mine, have you considered that?
On the one hand, the custom made Longlife system I had on my Volvo was superb, but on the other hand the exhaust on my 32 doesn't appear to be at all restrictive. But then, I do miss the low rumble at idle I had with the Longlife..... oh hum... ;)
Later dude,
Dan.

You asked me the exhaust question at the right time, as I just had a Longlife system custom made 2 days ago. They basically cut out the centre box and replaced it with a 3" straight though pipe from the CAT to the standard rear AMG box. They had to fabricate a Y pipe in order to combine the 2 pipes after the CAT into a single pipe to the rear box. I wanted standard looking with a bit more noise so this was an ideal mod, plus the fact that the OEM system is already a free-flow design made out of stainless steel in the first place. I got it done at the Basingstoke Long-Life dealer for £200 all inclusive with a lifetime guarantee, they did an excellent job almost looking factory fitted and the amount of time they spent doing it (4 hours) it was well worth it.

Now to the noise...at idle probably about 20% louder with a deeper rumble, at WOT it gives a wonderful smooth growl which is appropriate for an AMG car and again probably around 20% louder than normal but non of that chav sounding Saxo's on a Saturday night. On cruise it is hardly noticeable unless you know what it should sound like.
