Hi all,
I have had a C220 CDI W202 Yr2000 since March and it is really slow at setting off from a stand still. If you're at a junction and acellerate to move off it is really sluggish for 2 to 3 seconds and then it kicks in I've changed the glow plugs, tried starting off in fist gear manually even though it's automatic and even tried knocking the ESP off but nothing makes any difference. I've also put it on my computer using Carsof 7.4 and no fault codes come up, it can be quite dangerous at times because you have to put you're foot down before you actually want to move off. Has anyone else had this ptoblem and if so what is the cure?
Any advice will be appreciated.

Do you have the transmission set on "W" or "C" instead of "S". The car will pull away in 2nd gear if set to C or W only kicking down to 1st when you keep accelerating

Hi all.
Thanks for the response at least I'm not the only one with this problem. now for the answers to your questions. Firstly no the problem does not go away once warmed up, 2nd yes the gear selector is in S not W. I only tried it in W once and I put my foot down at a junction to move off and it was so slow that someone run into me (I always used W on my Rover Sterling whether it was because it was petrol and 2.7 ltr it was much more powerful than the Merc 220CDI I don't know) and 3rd I have already checked the airflow meter operation and cleaned it all although there was nothing really in it, no dirt or oil just a bit of dust.
and 4th is the cat next to the turbo something that I can check? if so how do I do that I replaced that plastic elbow on the turbo because it was cracked but it made no noticeable difference. Sorry I didn't reply straight away as I've got the house upside down at the moment with workmen.

Are you sure it isn't simply turbo lag? Ok 2-3 seconds is too much but have to floor mine a second or so before I want to tear off if I want a quick getaway. Otherwise it burbles out slowly before spinning the wheels - its just a feature of the old cdis. Still the kick is nice when it comes. Once rolling how is it?
Also, I NEVER use kick down if I want to get away quickly - its much better starting in 2nd.
It would be worth getting a garage to drive it and tell you if its normal as a starting point as normally they would exhibit some symptoms in normal driving as well and if yours doesn't, it sounds odd. Find another you can test drive - not entirely fair on the salesman but it will give you an idea of how they normally are.

Slow starting off

Hi,
Yes, once it kicks in its fine, it runs smoothly ticks over evenly and starts first time. I never start off with kickdown I always start in D would it be best starting in 2nd? I'll give it a try. Maybe it is just turbo lag but it does seem quite a lag at 2-3 seconds, I wonder if a change of air filter would help. I suppose part of it could be the adapting from driving petrol to diesel although I hired a passat diesel last year and didn't notice the problem with that although I don't remember if it was a turbo or not. I've just bought one of the diagnostic interfaces with carsoft 7.4, I'll try it out at the weekend and see if anything shows up in that. I don't suppose you have any idea where I can get the figures of what the various components should read do you, otherwise there's nothing to compare the readings to is there.
Sorry for taking up your time but any suggestions are more than welcome.

I dont know what carsoft package and interface you have but the china made interfaces only have 3 pins connected in the 38 pin plug and as a result you cant test all the systems on the car.

Slow moving off.

Hi Jib,
Yes I realised this after I bought it although I bought this of an English company with a UK supplier I should have bought the Multiplexer version with all K-Lines connected but I have made diagrams what pins on the 38 pin OBD socket do what so I can use the 3 banana plugs lead to access the other components (once I've made some sort of adapters for the banana plug pins to the small females on th 38 pin socket), because it comes connected for the CDI engine management. You can also use live data and injector testing as it stands but I will upgrade it to the multiplexer interface if this does a decent job so that I don't have to change pins manually.

Hi,
No! I've never resolved it. Checked glow plugs, regularly put in Redex to clean the fuel system, tried carsoft 7.4 fault diagnostic software via my laptop (no faults showed). So I'm still in the same position sadly I've had to adapt my driving to accommodate the problem but it is rather frustrating.
