I have a E320 1994 been running great up till a few weeks ago when accelerating away from a roundabout the engine seemed as if all cylinders were not firing. It runs perfectly fine when pulling away gently but if you try to give it that little bit more it justs coughs and splutters but clears itself after about 5 seconds. Any ideas??. I havent checked anything obvious yet ie plugs.

Could be one of the three coils gone.

Do you have the history of the car and whether the engine wiring loom has been changed ?

If still original loom, the insulation of the wires going to each coil (under the cover) could be starting to flake off.

To check the insulation, you will need to take the cover off and snip along the loose fabric outer layer and then inspect the inner plastic insulation for cracks which allow the wires to short together.

If you can rule out the wiring because it's new, then your MAS airflow sensor could be starting to fail due to grit getting past the airflow filter somehow.

Get the diagnostic codes read as well, it could show up some other faults.

Are you anywhere near me ?

Regards
