hi all - i seem to have a problem with my factory steering wheel (1991 300E) and was wondering if i could fit any merc steering wheel (don't need airbag) ie wili it fit straight on ?

am looking at the newer leather (thicker rimmed) but with smaller diameter or an older wood steering wheel that also isn't that large in circumference.

many thanks for any thoughts/ideas/suggestions ......

Smaller steering wheel...

I have a smaller, leather non-Merc steering wheel in my 230CE -89 W124. I don´t really like it, so I will switch it soon to a slightly larger with leather/wood (non-original though). Things to think about is that the steering wheel should not cover the gauges too much (you learn to live with bending over to see the fuel gauge =), and that you will have to use slightly more force turning the wheel (not any problem really). Another thing to notice is that non-original steering wheels (often) needs a distance part between the steering column and the wheel. But this usually is included with the wheel. About the airbag someone other maybe have better information...? Good luck with your new steering wheel!!

hi there Jacques - i take your point about non-merc steering wheels. while i do not mind if a little extra effort is required, i think i should definitely consider only another merc wheel but from something like a amg car to prevent fitting problems or even maybe one of the older wood style amg sec range ones. many thanks. :D

Your best bet is to try and find a leather sportline steering wheel from the same era which are a slightly narrower diameter.
