Hi I bought a 2003 Smart car, Spares or repair to tinker with. When you put the car in Auto and press the accelerator the car revs then seems like it is waiting for something then pulls away and sounds like the wheels are spinning on gravel then drives. I have checked for sticking brakes and all wheels are free moving. Any ideas of what it is and where to look?

These are a robotic manual. Full manual gearbox with electronic control of gear change and clutch. Some delay is normal.

The clutch actuator can sometimes be sticky which makes it worse and a good clean and lube can help. Also getting a clutch teach in can help (requires Star).

Also check engine mounts aren't shot causing the exhaust to rattle on the body.

Thank you. It is only on pulling away, either in auto or manual. If you pull away really really slowly, it does not do it as much, but if you pull away normally it makes this noise. The actual auto gear changes through the gears is fine. Only happens on pulling away. Not a metallic or exhaust nock noise, but I will check engine mounts. I will have to get a vid of it. I will also remove the actuator when I get chance and clean and grease it. I only paid a few hundred for it, to tinker with, but all help appreciated.

Not sure if you've found FQ101 yet but it's a great free resource for smart information.
There's also Evilution which is a paid resource.
