Smell of exhaust in the car

Over the last few months I have noticed that on occasion I get a fairly strong pong of exhaust fumes and occasionally a petrol smell inside the car. I can get this to go away by pressing the recirculation button on the air-con. Is there likely to be anything wrong with the car that could cause this or am I just picking up the smell of badly tuned cars in front of me (coming in through the aircon)?

I don't know if it has ever happened when there are no other cars around as, unfortunately, I'm seldom in that position!

Have you closed the windows & doors?

absolutely, although there is a small gap at the top of the window for the hose to go in. It's attached to the exhaust pipe, the engineers at Tony Perslow set it up like that. They said I was a "special case and deserved special treatment". Apparently mine is the only MB with this mod.....

Seriously for a micro-second I don't know if yours has just a normal pollen filter or a combined charcoal & pollen or a separate charcoal and pollen filter. But it may be worth spending some more of MBs profits on getting TP to change them for you.

They have. They were all changed as part of the B service last month. TP needed to get permission from MB to change the filters so I know they did them.

Then it may just be the smell of the badly running audi/vw/seat/skoda bus that you are trying to overtake that you are picking up inside the car.
