My E Class Diesel Exhaust has a smell that is difficult to describe, It is a bit like a metatalic acrid smell, quite strong.
Is this a sign that the Catalytic converter is about to give up? My car is year 2000 & a 3.2 CDi Estate.
Anybody got any idea of cost of replacement (catalytic converter that is) I am almost scared to ask this question!

faulty cat

hi,i had similar probs. with my e-200...acrid smell like eggs.....
i took it to an independent and he confirmed it was my cat.....however, i was quoted fro £850-1200 to have it supplied and fitted.....
but, after a search on the net,i was able to purchase a brand new unit for just under £100 and had it fitted from a excellent back street garage for only £80.00
what a saving! my advise, don,t pay extortinate prices..shop around, plenty of bargains to be had..good luck!

dont use a cheap cat, but first get it inspected, may not be your cat,

About 3 years ago I paid approx £900 for a complete genuine MB exhaust on my E300TD, fitted at a specialist.
That includes the section with the cat (approx £625) and rear box (approx £275)

Your quotes of £850-£1200 seem reasonable at the lower end and extortionate at the upper end.

There was a thread on this or the other forum a few months ago where someone removed the cat completely. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a requirement to have one and the car will pass an emissions test at MOT time without one, assuming all else is well with the engine.

It's also been discussed on here many times, you only need to pass the emissions test having a CAT is immaterial. You do have to pass the same emissions test as a car equipped with a CAT which is why you have one in the first place. However it is possible to pass the test without one as long as it is running well and they test it straight away after a decent run when it is at full operating temperature.

As for aftermarket CATs the general consensus on this forum is that if your keeping the car fit a genuine Mercedes one, if your selling then fit what you like. There have been numerous threads of members complaining about the noise and longevity of aftermarket CATs.
