snow chains

I'm planning to drive to Austria in my E36AMG estate (W124) on a ski trip next week. I have already fitted snow tyres but by the look of the amount of snow in Germany and Austria at the moment, snow chains will be necessary.
The problems is wheel arch/tyre clearance on the front wheels. I don't think chains will fit due to the lower suspension.
Does anyone have any advice ? I suppose I could fit chains on the rear wheels only so I have traction but steering and braking could be a problem.
Any ideas ?

There are different types of snow chains that you can get, some being very low profile rather than the more traditional heavy duty link type of snowchain

If you do a Google search on snowchains you should find a couple of suppliers who sell/rent these types of chain here in the UK.

Just spotted that you are in Paris, so ignore the last paragraph re the UK.

I have found a link for Pewag snowchains.....look at the Sportmatic chain...it only has a 9mm height on the links.

They should only be fitted to the rear in any case.
I am presuming that you have ASR. So there should be a snow chain button.
If not, turn off the ASR
What size of wheels/tyres have you purchased?

I've got 225/45/17 AMG alloys fitted with Pirelli snow tyres

You're right she is a top car - even has an AMG interior with black leather with grey inserts. Matches the bodywork !

Hi,

I use Pewag Trak, suitable according to the literature for cars with limited clearance. A doodle to fit and remove too. I too am off to Austria, St Anton on the 12th can't wait, like you say loads of snow.
