While looking up the SMMT to confirm their "Code of Practice" for New and Used cars I read that the SMMT is against the "capping" of the numbers of new (skilled) immigrants to these shores!

Err, did we not have one of the worlds finest motor manufacturing industries and led the world in engineering innovation or am I showing my age?

Have a read for yourself at the SMMT efforts to try to stop the OFT issuing new regulations against the motor trade:) It make interesting reading especially who has signed up to the Code of Practice.

The police have just arrested the MB of Mercedes-Benz trucks at their Head Office at Tongwell investigating on behalf of the Office of Fair Trading "price fixing".

Now all the police have to do is investigate MB for ****** their customers. ( fill in the blank yourself)

To be fair, they've arrested the guy as a formality as part of the investigation. Whether it results in prosecution in the longer term remains to be seen.
As for the immigration cap, I heard someone from PWC complaining similarly the other morning. Basically whilst their line is 'skilled workers' their real angle is that they would rather employ (read exploit) cheap foreign workers than employ British ones and have to pay proper salaries. As a freelancer I move about a fair bit. Every job I have moved from, I have been 'replaced' in a UK based job, many for the UK government, by a non EU person. My objection is that its not a level playing field. In all cases, skill was irrelevant in the recruitment process. They were utterly inexperienced and wouldn't have stood a chance in a conventional recruitment process, but as they came from India or China, (read cheap) all skill requirements were instantly and dramatically softened.
Hardly surprising these organisations are up in arms. Their policy of getting rid of expensive UK workers in favour of cheap overseas folk is under severe strain.

There is a lot of ignorance around isn't there?
British Leyland built trucks and buses not car's

Leyland were persuaded by the Govn' of the day to amalgamate with the bust British Motor Corporation to form BLMC...............

It's a fair bet that the marques formerly owned by BLMC account for 60 percent plus of classic car's still on UK roads?

British Leyland Ltd, later BL PLC manufactured cars too. They were the nationalised holding company. It was Leyland Motor Corp which built trucks."British" did not appear in the title of Leyland until the (ill fated) merger of 1968.

The short answer is that, prior to 1968 British Leyland Ltd was BLMC (formed 1967), so none.

Correct, it could not have owned any since it did not exist before 1968, Leyland yes, British Leyland no.
