Further my previous post re: Clonking see this link: http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=26803&page=1

It cost £400 plus most of it unnecessary but I have sorted out the main cause of the clonking.

It turned out to be the center prop shaft bearing but now realise the reason for some of the varying and unrelated symtoms I exeprienced which clouded the diagnosis.

I said I heard the noise over my right shoulder to the rear: this part was because I idiotically had a can of grease in the boot that was knocking against the side walls.

I said that vibration was felt in the center console area below the arm rest, actully approx 1 foot rearward from that area. This was due to the the center prop shaft bearing being worn.

however I also said that I felt a jolt in the steering whilst streering to the right leading to the unnecessary change of the lower controlling arms.

I havent felt the jolt since the change but there remains a noise and mild jarring that seemed to occur in time with the clonking before the bearing change and this caused the confusion in isolating the problem.

The jarring happens when I brake to a full stop and is felt thru the brake pedal.

It is also felt beneath the foot rest (left) at same time and somtimes when the car exeperinces some kinds of bumps in the road, usually small ones that that dont bring the dampers to kick in.

When I make a hard turn i.e. more that 60 degrees there is a click thats almost a clonk but not quite. And when it happens, I can imagine the click to come from somewhere at the end of the the steering column where it might meet the fron axle......:-?

Any ideas?

That's similar to the symptoms I had, and it turned out to be a broken spring, which was catching as the wheel was turned.

Broken spring, my CL did this, I checked the springs as I know MB springs tend to break but could never see anything wrong, it then failed the MOT on a broken front spring yet I couldnt see it, 4 inches of broken spring on the wishbone!!!

Guys when my indie changes my wishbones he said the springs were alright.

One thing that has happened intermittenly is that the the clicking almost most faint clonking occurs sometimes while in traffic not moving.

Sorry Guys This was another one of those times when I read my writing later on and I am appalled.

It was meant to read the clicking almost faint clonking occurs intermittenly from the base of the steering column, sometimes while in traffic and not moving.

But is the idler arm bush easy to change on a w124? If it is, should I not change this in the light of the work that has been done prior.

see first post...
