Having purchased a '98 160 Avantgarde (for my wife) some twelve months ago from a small used car dealer we have recently ran into a sticky situation with our local MB Dealership.

The car itself has covered 39,000 miles with a FSH with this particular MB dealership so they are more than aware of the vehicles history.

The steering column has just been replaced and did not qualify under the '3rd party extended warranty' due to MB reporting that the fault was purely wear and tear? Unfortunately I was away on business during such time and my wife had the unfortunate pleasure of settling a bill in excess of £500.00 for a replacement column and labour without any explanation or possible cause..

I know very little about cars (becoming apparent) but would appreciate any advice surrounding similar incidents. I have since contacted the MB dealership who have reported that due to the 'age' of the vehicle replacing the column isn't unusual, nothing to do with the low mileage? Though despite this they could offer me no further reasoning.....

I have been advised that the early A-Class models were recalled due to similar experiences and that I should perhaps contact MB Customer Services for input.

Any advice would greatly be appreciated so I know which step to take next?

Regards

PP

p.s. There still seems to be a problem with the steering as there is considerable play in the steering wheel itself which rattles??
