SLK 300 v6, 2010
My SLK 300 v6 (R171) is due on mileage to have its spark plugs changed which I have been quoted by 2 indy garages in addition to the service B I already paid for (which was actually showing as D on my dashboard but the garage said they're basically the same thing). Price quoted was £203 including VAT at one (1.2 hours labour at £85) and £189 at the other who said it would take 30 to 40 minutes.

Do these quotes seem reasonable for repairers/ servicing and if not what is? I have already paid £350 for the service so it's adding up to alot more than expected. Any recommendations in the South Manchester area would be appreciated.

Might be worth contacting SPR Autos in Stockport an MB indie and ask how much they would charge for comparison. As above though the prices you have had do not seem out of the way.

You could buy the plugs yourself and get them fitted if you wish, if you want to retain service history really indie is the way. Price wise is what it costs. If you want to have a laugh call Mercedes.

Well. I can solve the riddle.

MB did my plugs as part of my recent A service on 14 March 2024. Breakdown as follows

8 plugs at £10.53 each plus half an hours labour, plus VAT, total £166.42

They gave me a 40% discount on labour.

So actually cheaper than some of the Indies quoted.

Total cost of service was £686.64, including brake fluid change, spark plugs change, MOT test, transmission oil filter, A service and VAT.

So do not dismiss MB out of hand, they are pretty competitive for some stuff.

Bit different when you have 24 plugs to replace though.

The M113k engine in my SL55 had 16 plugs, it was a nice surprise to find the M157 engine in the SL63 only has 8 plugs. I never thought I'd be saving money, but there you go. It also has noticeably better mpg.

Never knew that. 8 plugs - luxury.
