Please can somebody give me advice for upgrading my Mercedes 300e (W124) front and rear speakers (especially front). I would like to keep the fitments original with no cutting etc.... :?

Extract from my earlier post:

I changed my front speakers on my 93CE. The only ones that would fit properly were Blakpunt twins. They have the tweeter on front of the main speaker. I am prety sure that these became standard in the later EClass. I considered trying to adapt other brands but after my local motor factors let me see other types to see if they would fit. These Blackpunt were made especially for W124's. They were very tight when I changed them from a my saloon to my coupe, but they fit, and the sound is hugely improved. I will look in the atic to see if I can find the box, i think I put the old speakers in it.

AND:

HERE IS WHAT IS WRITTEN ON THE BOX

BLAUPUNKT CAR magic

Car-Specific Coax-System 80W

.......... FRONT.................................. BACK

Mercedes (w124) Lim.......................... Mercedes (w124) Lim
(s124) Stationwagon
(c124) Coupe................................... (c124) Coupe
(a124) Cabriolet

204

7 606 204 000

These speaker are not that cheap, but they are good for 80w each. They weigh about 3 times the original or more. For the back I bought spurious ones and adapted them.

Also try Rainbow, not Zippy and George but www.rainbow-car-audio.de

German company but they make good quality speakers and can supplyto UK Car Audio firms. They do front and rears for 124 series which drop straight in like Blaupunkts.

Why don't you fit 5 1/4" speakers? They fit, if you cut part of the frames of the speaker (no cutting of the car needed). Surely these would give the best sound quality, since they are bigger, also this means you can go for component speakers too.

Not had any prices on Blaupunkts yet they dont seem to do 120mm ones, the Rainbow are coming in at around 120 dollars £70 about. The original speakers are Blaupunkts i know they are old but they sound terrible. would like a system got Phoenix gold amps etc from a previous car but i know with the insulation in the car the best i can hope for is some good quality speakers.

Do you have any experience with Rainbow speakers as this now seems the most probable choice........

I managed to get a piar of Sony 13cm dual -driver 'custom' fit speakers in the dash with a little persuasion ... i.e cutting. They were £35 for the pair at Halfords.

Rainbow Speakers

Just installed Front and Rear Rainbow Acoustic Speakers (£175) and work great although having a "bass" moment but out of ideas as to where to situate any Subs. Think may give it a miss (too old now). Reccomend these speakers as a decent upgrade to standard Blaupunkts. Good Sound

I had a set of these http://www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/s..._productId_504845_langId_-1_categoryId_212533

that I had in my Prelude but I removed them before I sold her, dropped them into the rear of the W124 I have, fit fine but I have yet to secure them properly, original grills cover them too.
