I was driving my wifes ML today and trying to get used to the Command and Sat Nav set up. It struck me that the thing that I'll really miss about Tom Tom is the speed camera warnings I have uploaded. I'm sure that this will have been done to death in the past but is it possible to drop speed camera details into a Merc?

Has anybody come up with a solution or is it just time to bite the bullet and buy a road angel?

Illegal in France and some other Euro country's and soon to be here I believe:shock: having said that I find them extremely useful in my 'Snooper' Sat Nav:lol:

Garmin shows all fixed cameras and you can update regularly on your home computer to put on where all the mobile units will be in the next month or so. The police have to put this info online. I find it really useful and wish it was available on COMAND.

BTW Garmin is not illegal in France AFAIK only radar detectors.

For France

" With regard to TomToms and other GPS systems, which have speed camera locations programmed in to their software, the situation is confusing. These are not officially "radar detectors", but manufacturers are obliged to make new software available, and most will be doing so in early 2012. By summer 2012, Tomtoms and other GPS systems will be technically in breach of the law if they still have radars listed in their Points of Interest software; and even if it is not clear how roadside police can stop and check for offending software, rather than hardware, drivers are warned to err on the side of precaution and download the latest map software for France. This is advisable anyway, since older software is not up to date with regard to new routes, new speed restrictions, and other changes."

From the AA

"Effective from 3 January 2012 French laws prohibiting drivers from carrying devices capable of detecting speed cameras have been extended to include devices able to warn or inform of the location of speed cameras e.g. satnav or gps systems capable of showing speed camera sites as PoI."

Not possible to add speed cameras to Comand. Personally I just an Inforad. Discreet and free updates, no subscription charge.

The Inforad is discreet Ifind it quite good because I dont use the satnav locally and its easy to have your mind on other things and drive past a camera at a few MPh over without realising

The Pogo + is small and can use a remote antenna. very discrete !!

Thier database is also one of most up-to-date I've experienced.

Trouble with Inforad and other free-to-update systems is that they only use data on fixed camera sites.

The Garmin speed camera system costs approx £29 per year but also gives the locations of police mobile sites -which the police post on line on a regular basis. You connect to the Garmin website on your home computer and download the up-to-date locations direct to the Garmin via a USB. Very useful!

Such a shame cars don't all have a Garmin Dock and/or TomTOM dock rather like the i-pod docks.

All subscription devices show mobile sites, that is why you pay for updates

Thats actually one thing I hate about my wife's Garmin. I can just about stand the tinny thin voice, but every few minutes you get pinged by the annoying little sod about mobile speed cameras that are no longer there.

When there are speed cameras or average speed cameras about - you know, those subtle big Yellow things - I go into cruise control or speed limiter until I'm through.

I can't say I've never speeded, of course, but where there are cameras they are mostly there for a reason. The A5 is full of em fit to bursting.

I use a hard wired B2.....Pogo predecessor.

Comand can be replaced......Oxford Car Audio do an Alpine unit that seems to be all singing and all dancing......hard drive, touch screen and cameras. Not bad at about £1050 fitted to my SL.
The problem for me is that the appearance is very different but the attraction of ditching the separate B2, effectively incorporated into an integrated system, and being able to ditch the relatively antiquated TeleAtlas disc system is a powerful incentive to change.
It will probably take me months thinking about this.

Does anyone know of a dealership or outlet that can update map data discs as a one-off download for a given fee?

I checked with my local MB dealer and they know sod all about map discs; had a set once but no idea where they are, and havent supplied any in the last millenium - or some such.

I dont know why MB dont do this. Its common practice in the Software industry to have "soft" downloads available for a one off charge. Thats how Garmin and Tom-Tom do it, with a few quid per download rather than making folk buy whole new data discs every time.
