I use a hard wired B2.....Pogo predecessor.

Comand can be replaced......Oxford Car Audio do an Alpine unit that seems to be all singing and all dancing......hard drive, touch screen and cameras. Not bad at about £1050 fitted to my SL.
The problem for me is that the appearance is very different but the attraction of ditching the separate B2, effectively incorporated into an integrated system, and being able to ditch the relatively antiquated TeleAtlas disc system is a powerful incentive to change.
It will probably take me months thinking about this.

Yes but it will look all wrong in the car

I know.....and that is the problem.....on the other hand the system we have is so yesteryear that it will have to be replaced one day......unlike you I intend keeping my car indefinitely.

Inforad has mobile sites location too. :)

Not according to their website which says: -
"Inforad uses the UK's premier database of fixed speed cameras"

Out of interest, whereabouts in Oxfordshire are you based? Will have to keep an eye out for your SL. :) Aston near Bampton myself.

I know Aston......used to be work based in Carterton. I live in Beckley just up the hill out of Headington past the crematorium.

Illegal in France and some other Euro country's and soon to be here I believe:shock: having said that I find them extremely useful in my 'Snooper' Sat Nav:lol:

I don't think they can make them illegal here as they are SAFETY cameras not speed cameras, the devices are allowed to warn when aproaching one as it is a (supposed) accident black spot.

Ive just ordered a Road Angel gem to serve the camera and speed trap warning role. I have mixed feelings about having to but another add on when really Comand should be able to take POI databases. It seems to me that VW group are far ahead of Mercedes in the use of tech and intuitive systems? Will write a bit of an idiots review when the road angel arrives.

I agree about the Comand Unit......I have had an Origin B2 hard wired into the SL from new which is excellent but it would be better if the ''camera'' data was neatly incorporated into the Comand unit. Consequently, and also because my Comand unit is ''old hat'' already, I am contemplating putting in an Alpine INA-W910R.
It will change the look of the console so I am very reticent to do this but sometimes the driving force has to be function over form.
Still thinking though.

Its a shame isnt it, surely Mercedes could just buddy up with a supplier and allow them to use state of the art architecture. I looked at the hard wiring option but elected for road angel as I only need it for trips away from the norm, my daily 90 mile commute to Manchester barely gets to 70 anyway so its for the occasional jaunt

And if not the cameras they could have put the speed limits in, I mean its all old hat now. I bought one of the 7" sat navs from Ebay circa £65, that has cameras and warns you when you are speeding

Speed Camera Info

The MB technician at Sindelfingen told me that, apart from speed/safety camera POI's being illegal in France and I think now also in Germany, MB deliberately don't put this info into COMAND or Audio 50 as they are concerned about legal liability ie where a driver is caught speeding and tries to blame MB for not having warned him!

BTW from July this year in France you will have to carry your own breathalyser (actually two as you could be stopped twice in the same journey!) but this is not being enforced until November.

I feel more exposed driving without my B2 than I think I might were I to go out without my trousers.

Hi again all. Just a quick reveiw on my recent purchase. I bought a Road Angel Gem (£119 from amazon) and 3 years camera database for £150.
The unit itself is small, pretty modern and fits nicely on its holder. It has a battery which is good for 3/4 hours so no need to trail wires about, simply put it on charge when you arent using it. The GPS camera database seems very accurate, it has a GPRS (mobile phone) card in it which constantly updates speed limits and camera locations without any need to dock with PC.
The unit has a lazer sensor as well, though I cant say for sure if that works as havent passed a camera van yet.
So all good, but there is one problem. When approaching a camera there is a voice warning "fixed camera 250 yards", which is entirely sufficient to alert a human being to slow down. The noise that then kicks in as you come closer sounds like a Darlek reaching orgasm! Terrible screechy wailing noise which warns that you are getting closer to the camera that the ****** thing warned you about a few yards back. There is no way to disable this awful noise- I've written to their support team requesting a fix.
In summary, good, if slightly plasticy and cheap feeling product. Very accurate and innovative with no need to update via PC. If only I can get rid of that awful screeching I'll be a happy chappy!
