ACPO recommendations, which most forces follow.

Thanks for the clarification. Doesn't affect me anyway in as much as I always respect the speed limits, often much to the frustration of the driver behind me. That is where Cruise Control is such an asset. :)

^^ This. I have been pointless for 25 years. Scored a big fine and a ban in 1995, and decided after that to stick to the limits, especially 30, 40, 50 limits through towns, villages etc. It's easy enough if you have cruise control.

No it is not law, I believe it is totally discretionary :)
Most speedometers over read by 10% so if caught at real 31mph the speedo would be at around 34mph.....

This is why I set my cruise to 77mph on Motorways, 40 years licence still clean..

Speed limiter is great but setting cruise control could mean you are driving to the speed set rather than what is right for the current road conditions. As the Police will tell you, 30mph is a limit, not a target.

Whilst we are all boasting about clean licenses, I have had three points in 50 years, and that was 34 years ago. I do mostly respect limits in built up areas but can’t claim to be compliant on faster roads and motorways when conditions are good.

I notice most people go under the M3/M25 cameras at exactly 70, 60 or whatever the variable limit is. I know I certainly do. Even the Range Rovers and Audis slam on their brakes for those.

On other"non-regulated" motorways you are probably OK at 75 mph, the police are probably concentrating their limited resources on the 100 mph club.

Safe at 77mph speedo reading on all Motorways without restrictions, when reduced speed overheads are showing, add 10% and you will be ok, 40 years of driving has proven it works..

I tested 4x cars using GPS and against friends parallel on other lane, all cars were over reading around 8 -10%.

Interesting as my car is bang on 2 mph lower compared to a couple of different GPS’s so cruise control at 72 and I’m doing 70

I don't know about 70mph but at 30mph mine is actually doing 28mph :)

No, its not statutory, it is discretionary. I should have made that clear. However Northants publicly declared that they only prosecute at 10% +2 and above, then went ahead and booked hundreds of people for being slightly over the temp 40(?) limit they were enforcing.

Same here, Mercedes are pretty consistent in over reading by 2mph
I will continue at 77mph, worked for 40 years driving just about every motorway in at least 8x different cars, if I get a ticket will let you know :).

You’re probably right and never going to have an issue, I’ve been used to going through a lot of average speed cameras when I used to have to travel around the country so got used to the lower speed,

An old B-Class.
Being deliberately vague here but.. I know someone who knows someone that has received 12 points all, from being caught at the same speed camera (40mph) in his village. This guy is a big shot & drives a lovely expensive car with all the mod cons. He now faces court to try and keep his license (need his car to get to their subsidiary companies).

Some people are really stupid.

Update on the initial reason for this thread:

Thank you all again for your assistance regarding the speeding prosecution, we successfully negotiated them to be combined into a continuing offence in court. 4pts & £190 fine. (unfortunately not 3pts as they took the highest 'average' as their base point under the sentencing guidelines.)
Albeit the magistrate was initially adamant that there was no such thing as a continuing offence and would not consider the dashcam footage which showed on the first offence the 30 signs being completely obscured, with no other markings or visible streetlamps to suggest the limit had been reduced 60-30. Thankfully the clerk of the court(?) stood up for us on that one and made a very blunt point to the rather rude male magistrate.. who also wouldn't let the female magistrate get a word in edgeways. * rolls eyes *.

So now its dealt with, see the attached and play 'spot the 30 sign'... good luck! (The truck on the right was parked)

Glad it's over for you and now you just have to be cautious then in about 3 years it'll just be a dim memory. I've seen beaks like you describe, especially when it's fairly obvious one of the others is a newbie. I was pleased to read that the Clerk stood up for you although it might have gioven you p[erverse pleasure to appeal agains whatever he ruled because he was ignoring (or at least tying to ignore) factual evidence. Do you think that made a difference to the penalty in the end?
