I am guessing that this is embarrassingly obvious but here we go anyway.

On the dial of my speedo there are red marks at 35mph and 55mph. What do they mean?

Don't know not on mine. But 35 & 55MPH are typical American speed limits.

I had a quick google and the only explanations are what you are saying.

That's it exactly. You may also have fit markers, one single dot, a double dot and a triple dot on the outer rim of the dial. They're maximum speeds in 1st 2nd and 3rd.

I was going to say that LK, as our old w116's had the dots on the speedo's........Great minds think alike

Just checked and not on mine but with the torque of the V8 I don't tend to take it anywhere near the limit anyway.

45 for 1st, 75 for 2nd and 120 for 3rd.
