I suppose I already know the answer to this, but what are people's opinions on a poly belt which has a couple of small splits along it?

There is no loss of tension, and it was not mentioned at the service I had last week, but yesterday I noticed them whilst fiddling under the bonnet.

The splits are longitudinal, not lateral by the way.

How long has it got do you think, and should I be unduly worried?

How long is a piece of string? Buy & fit a new one at your convenience rather than it wait for it to snap on a cold wet night miles from anywhere if you think it has a chance of breaking. ;) ;)

Yeah, I know... :)

It was more a case of - do I panic (because failure is imminent), or have I got a week or so to get it changed?

I know it's a piece of string kind of argument, but the length can be estimated to some degree.

Ha! With my business it is 10 miles one week, and 1000 the next...

Change it sooner rather than later then, otherwise the Law of Sod will have it break at the most inconvenient time/place. ;)

ECP - or get a Contitech one from your local factor. If its split longitudinally its knackered ! ! You might want to check your alternator freewheel clutch pulley as partial seizure has been known to shred belts - might be a warning sign- if its faulty it will rapidly do the same to the next belt.

Yeah, I plan to - I'm not usually lucky like that! £16 from ECP with the forum discount isn't exactly a hardship, is it?

(Mind you - changing it might be...)

There are no shiny or worn areas - just the small logitudinal splits. But I will check all the idlers and pulleys for free movement and no FOD whilst refitting.
