The switch has no effect, any ideas of what to check first? Just posted a picture on the site if your interested in seing the car. It's really nice, had it from new full AMG engine, skirts every option known to man!

It may depend upon your right boot, if you keep it pinned then the gearbox will act the same in both modes.
However 'E' should start the car in 2nd gear and 'S' in 1st. With the engine on, brake on and car in drive press the switch you should be able to feel it change from 1st to 2nd and back.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've tried everything from lead to concrete boots, no effect

Mine is an oldie as you will note, but it uses first gear in both 'E' and 'S' modes. However I notice the difference most when driving at around a steady 50 mph on the level in 'E' for example and gently squeezing the throttle all the way to just before kickdown - no downchange occurs. In 'S' under the same conditions, a downchange is immediate. Hope this may be of some help.

On your car it has to be starting from standstill, you will not get anything parked,take off on a fast start and count the changes, then put it in the other mode and do it again,
Let me have the first 6 numbers of the VIN and I will see what box you have.

I have recently purchased an E36 AMG coupe and was look on the owners forum, and see that you told neilg23 about the spec/delivery date/ other interesting details of his car from his VIN number. I was wondering if you could tell me where to find all this out, or indeed if I give you my VIN, run the same check on my car.

Do you still have the spec sheet for the E36 w124 shift points?
If so, can you drop to in an email to me, the 2 E36's I have shift at slightly different points, I know its a case of adjusting the modulating pressure but just want to know which one if right.
