Just done a chassis number check on Mercedes Club RU and it says a W124 estate has:

653 sports chassis with 8-hole light alloy rims (? 01.01.1990)

- is this Sportline? Or something different? It doesn't have Sportline badges or drive like a Sportline car

653 means you have the chassis part of the Sportline options that were available.

Meaning it's got the springs & dampers, bushes, quicker steering rack, 7" wheels, 205 tyres & etc but no badges & no trim changes?

I'll have to check the wheel width. That'll be a good clue

Why are these not badged as Sportline, I wonder?

The UK was not a market that got the sportline badge. The option just did not exist. Other countries did get the badges. Perhaps MB UK thought it a little to "flash" and vulgar in this country. Ok for the US market though.

In the Uk there were 2 parts to the sportline option, the interior package and the performance package. You could buy either or both, and the nterior packages were slighly different depending on if you had an estate, saloon, or coupe. This was mostly to do with the seating arrangements, with the saloon getting 4 sports seats, the estate getting 2 front sports seats, and the coupe getting none. You could get a chequered sportline cloth, but not if you wanted leather of course.

For most coupes the only interior thing you will notice that is different will be the steering wheel design and the leather gear knob. You will of course notice that there will be 3 turns of the wheel from lock to lock, but that is the performance part of the package.

Now GD T, what is all this "ammo" stuff? I know I have a big gunsight on the bonnet, but did't realise that 2ammo" was another option!
