I need some advice on whether or not to change my shocks and springs.

The car is an E280 W124, it has done 125K. Recently I noticed in town over potholes the front O/S would thump over rather than 'thud' (if you know what I mean).

Now I have it in my head that I should change both the shocks and possible the springs.

Q. Is there some tell tale signs of when to change them?
Q. Is it better to change them all at once?
Q. And finally, what do you think it is likely to cost me?

Many thanks

David

Before sh*ll
ing out, i would have a check underneath to make sure nothing has worked loose and needs tightening. Reason i say is my little 190 is nudging 150k now and the suspension is fine. However if you do decide to replace, it might be wise (if the wallet stretches) to do at the very least both sides on the front...reason i say is with a new suspension set up on one side, and the old worn suspension on the other, it might make for an uneven ride.

A rew weeks ago there was a similar topic to this, the basic answer from Andy seemed to be, that once you reach the magic 100k milestone, then think about spending money on shocks/springs.

Many years ago i had a vehicle, (i'm not confessing what type, its too embarassing now), this got to 120k, the rear shocks failed the mot, i changed them to pass it, it transformed the car, within a week i had changed the fronts as well. Hope this aswers your querry.

Thanks for the advice so far. As it is in for an MOT this week and I will ask them (I must remember to leave my wallet at home) to have a look around at the suspension. Failing that I will get a quote for a complete change at each corner.

Dave E, I guess you had a Lada Riva (I think that was the 4x4 one wasn't it?), ideal for the caravan!!!! Alternatively, the embrassing car award must go to the Princess or Allegro!!!

For the greater good of mankind i'll come clean. I know this probably means i'll have to stand in the corner at the gathering, with a silly hat on, but i have to confess.......... I USED TO OWN A NISSAN PRIARIE!!

But since then i've been through rehab, got my life in order, got rid of the wife that thought the Prairie was "cute", and seen the light of day.
