Hi guys,

Quick question. I have a 1996 E320 with unknown lowering springs in it. Running about 2deg negative camber hence Im wearing out tires. I want to put the car back to standard and have been offered avantgarde springs second hand.

Apparently these are 25 mm lower than stock. My question is, what are the differences between classic and avantgarde suspension - will using these springs cause and weird tire wear , etc ?

the avantgarde springs are lower and stifffer than the stock springs for the rest of the range. if you checjk the 'pips' on the rubber mounting cups there are between 1 and 5 'pips' if i remember correctly. the more pips there are, the thicker the cup. if your on the thinnest one and you fit the thickest ones, that will make up some of the difference. as for tyre wear, just get the camber properly set up but set it for an avantgarde e320 rather than an elegance or classic, and tyre wear shouldnt be a problem anyhow!

Kiwi Bloke. Brand new springs from MB aren't that expensive. I would only fit the correct springs for the car, and I certainly wouldn't fit second hand ones - you just don't know their history and the cost of the parts is small compared to the labour cost of fitting them. If you've got a classic, fit classic springs. As TurboPete says, the cups will give you some degree of adjustment.

As for the tyre wear, I reckon that'll be cured when the car is running at it's correct height. If you do end up with a lower car, and are concerned about the camber angle there is a kit (I had it fitted) that stands the front wheels a little more vertical (I had excessive inner tyre wear on my avantgarde before having the job done). However, I suspect you won't need to do this.
