Can anyone enlighten me on the thermostat location on the Sprinter 2.9,5cyl engine, circa 1998.
The reason I am asking.I have a E210 in Russia with the same engine.I have a very long warm up time of around 20kms drive to get up to 80deg.I checked the thermostat & found nothing wrong but replaced it anyway with no change. The strange thing is the thermostat is located in the bottom of the engine block (where the bottom hose enters the block). So the top of the engine warms up but also warms the top hose & rad at the same time.I have been told the Sprinter has the thermostat located in the top of the engine cooling system & drivers say they warm up in about 5kms.In my case if this location is the design of the engine it may be something I will have to live with. But as the cold winter draws in here it would be good to get some quicker heat.If anyone can en-lighten me or have any ideas I would be gratefull.

Thanks George.I may have mis-led you by my thread. The vehicle I have is a E210 Eclass car. But has the 602 engine the same as a Sprinter. They were only produced in LHD & so were not on the UK market.
I have looked at drawings in the link you sent & the thermostat looks to me as though its into the waterpump housing at the bottom of the engine, not in the top as I was told the Sprinter thermostat was.
If my car engine cooling system design is the same as the Sprinter then it should warm up as quick as the van.Maybe slightly slower as the van engine may have to work a little harder due to the van being heavier. But the 20kms I need to drive seems a long distance to get up to temp.

Thanks Malcolm. The drawing is the same system design as my car.So it looks like the person telling me Sprinters had the thermostat in the top of the engine was not correct.
If there are any 2.9 engined Sprinter owners reading this can you confirm how quick your Sprinter reaches 80deg running temp. I have been told they warm up in about 4 or 5kms.My car is taking 20kms

I always used to blank off ½ of the rad when I lived in Sweden,,and driving here it never gave any problems,,you have the temp gauge anyway to keep an eye on

Malcolm. I had most of the rad blanked off last winter but it still didnt warm up any quicker. It seems that the cold air passing through the heater matrix is enough to dramaticaly increase warm up time. Maybe the engine isnt working hard enough in the car, compared to the Sprinter as I cannot find anything wrong with the car.The cooling system design seems to add a lot more coolant that has to be heated to get up to temp than a system with the thermostat in the top of the engine.

mine warmed up within 3 or 4 miles easily, thermostat is on the left hand side of the engine (if your in front of it) just below the exhaust manifold looks like a metal tube coming out of the block with a bigger bit where it joins it, and the big coolant hose on the other end, going to get some bits off my van (now written off) tomorrow mine is only a few months old i can get it off you want to buy it?

Bill312.Thanks for your offer but I think my car is the same as your Sprinter thermostat housing. My thermostat housing is into the side of the water pump, just above the alternator.I will try to have a look at a Sprinter this week as I am in Uk. If the Sprinter is different I would certainly buy the parts from you to modify my car. There must be something different or something wrong if your vans warm in 3 or 4 miles & my car needs 20kms to get up to temp.
