Hi, i found this superb site by accident! lol! I hope somebody can help me here, as i have a little problem with
my 1996 N Reg, Sprinter 208 swb, 2.3 Non Turbo Diesel Model.
It has developed a very strange fault, in that when you go to start it from cold, The Glow Plug light DOES NOT come on when i turn the ignition on.
It appears that it is not getting a heat, and it just turns over & over. It has only just started doing this, So i tried a tiny ammount of easy start to see what would happen, and it started perfect. However, i KNOW this IS NOT the way to start it every day!!!!

once the van gets started, the Glow Plug light comes on????? The engine in the van is a belter, it is not on its last legs or anything, & once started the van drives superb.

I am just confussed as to why the glow plug light comes on after the van is started, and Not when i go to start it.

Also, to switch the van off, i have to stall it, as the ignition does not turn it off????? i Know it makes the van sound an old dog, but it is not, it
really drives well, with no other issues.

I hope this makes sense to somebody, and i look forward to maybe getting to the bottom of it.
Many Thanks

Your Mercedes
nice 201 2.5D 1993 & very nice 129 SL500 1994
You have as english suggests at least one glowplug that is not working correctly.

Have a root around this forum and you will find many others with the same problem, and some good advice about fixing it (along with some pitfalls you may encounter on the way).

This glowplug fault will not affect the stopping of your engine in anyway

i totally agree with english1182 & wireman. you definitely need new glowplugs. in my merc E300TD, the glow plug light stayed on afterwards which is telling you that the problem is there, change all of them if poss, & put the same make in, & do spend the time to look around the forum for fitting them, there is some pretty decent advice around here, believe me!

Like others have said deffinatley glow plugs, the flashing sqence meant some thing, that long ago, so driffted off. As for the engine not stopping, try freeing of the rack/leaver at the rear of the fuel pump they used to seize and would not pull back to cut off the fuel. Also, all from memory, so dont shoot the messenger, this was operated by vaccum and pipes etc perished etc etc and all that goes with them, so check them.
