I'm having some bl****y trouble with this van!Now it's started rumbling and vibrating and it seems to be from the chassis. It gets worse as the speed increases and it makes no difference whether on or off power or out of gear.No "whining" sound just a rumble and vibes. The front suspension -Spring,dampers and ball joints were replaced last year, along with the tracking being sorted and new tyres and that made a big difference to ride and handling. (this is getting expensive)Could it be a wheel bearing?

Rumble?

Hi there,If it does the same thing out of gear try looking at the prop center bearing, also check all the prop bolts, and give it a good shake to see if any thing is lose, you will have a bit of play if you twist it but it should not move any where else, try rocking the wheels to see if you've got any thing lose (wheel bearings),Mike

Hi . It sound to me like wheel bearing failure especially the rumbling sound. It is easy to test for if you can jack it up and rotate the wheels freely. If you hear rumbling from any it will be wheel bearing failure. If it is, do not attempt to drive the car any further as the consequences can be serious. A worn bearing will generate enough heat to cause failure of the whole bearing assembly to the point where the wheel can detach without notice or further warning.

If its a bearing you should be able to tell by jacking each corner up and manipulating the wheel.

This has came up before on a different van, unfortunately I can't remember whether it got sorted or not. I'm pretty sure it involved flywheel or propshaft changing etc. Do a search on "vibrations not good ones" or something like that. I'd guess it was about a year ago.

Propshaft centre bearing, especially if it's a long wheel base, wheel bearings are uncommon.

Forgot to mention that it's ex Transco and has a PTO driven compressor and generator,so the prop is not standard and has no centre bearing as this is where the PTO unit is.

If it's a twin wheeler they are prone for rear axles going, £1800 ish + fitting.
