Hi. I have a problem with a 2001 311cdi sprinter I hope somone can point me in the right direction with.
When you accelerate hard the engine cuts out at around 3500 rpm. All the ignition lights come on as you would expect and you can restart the engine straight away. Driving normally is no problem & the fault does seem to be intermittent.
Please help!!! Any suggestions are much appreciated.

It sounds like it could be a fuel starvation problem under load. Assuming you've serviced your main fuel filter recently, it might be worth checking any secondary and fuel-tank filters. Failing that, look at the fuel delivery pipework, injectors and then the pump.

Of course it could be something else entirely, but the fault as you've described it makes me think fuel system.

Dont thinkit's fuel, if it was you would have probs sarting in the morns. Pretty scetchy description put I'll have a pop and hopefuly it will generate interest to bring others into the discussion. When it's cutting out and lights come on the dash you must be loosing live feed to some thing and then as it cuts out regaining it, so here's the common one's.

Harness that runs down to the starter, below the fuel filter is cliped to the block. This rubs through and under hard acceloration the engine moves touches the worn wires sends it toearth looses ign feed, cuts out, then as the engine comes back it regains live feed, quite a common fault.

Black plastic bag next to the battery, if facing up fills with water, again under acceloration moves and water in the bag swamps the mulit plug in there, empty bag fit correct way and spray with wd40, again common fault.

Now this is a bit less but it's a known one. Wirning harness runs along the front of the chassis under the rad from left to right, this rubs through on the corner of the rad and again all sorts of weird elec faults. If you remove the front grille and look at the corners it will be noticeble. Repair the wires and do some thing to prevent it happening again on both sides.

There you go that will keep you busy tonight.

You may well be right... but I had a similar thing when I first got my 410D. It started and ran fine most of the time, but intermittently the engine would just die completely under load, ignition lights on and everything, exactly as fuzzface describes.

I didn't think it was fuel at first, but eventually discovered the secondary & tank filters hadn't been serviced in years. I sorted these and have had no repetition of the problem in more than a year now. So I'm not saying it's definitely fuel... but don't write it off too hastily either.

I have had a similar fault with my beloved sprinter..

I have recently started having problems with my 311 Cdi, when it gets warm it won't rev past 3000, I have changed actuator to turbo, cleaned boost sensor and other sensor that on same pipe, cleaned all hoses out and were carboned up, changed transducer, and cleaned pipes from inter cooler to turbo... My van does not have egr valve and I don't think it has maf sensor..I have also replaced boost control sensor, and oil/air seperator(breather) and cleaned all hoses...!
Have plugged it in to snappon diagnostic and no fault except to do with glow plug relay staying on, which has been like that for a while... Or could that cause lack of power
Please help as I'm really struggling with this annoying problem..!!

Many thanks Damian

I haven't got one, but those with them have been on here saying they have, but I have looked on the parts diagrams and only see ones outside the tank so I could be wrong here.

This one needs the fault codes reading on Star and actual values etc.

This would probably show a fault code to help with the diagnosis however I think that it sounds like an injector wiring problem perhaps shorting out on the engine mounting bracket or a plug loose on an Injector.

Could be that the Speed Sensor is malfunctioning or some loose contacts in the wiring
harness, could be even loose contact in the ignition key switch. Ones it is resolved, please
let us know what the problem was. Thanks.

Has anyone carried out a DTC check? If so which fault code kept coming up? Get that info and there is your starting point! Also, has there been any fuel system or mechanical work carried out recently?
