Sprinter 316 Driving Style

Question about engine management on a Mercedes 316 sprinter 2.8 engine 2003 model.
VIN WDB 9036122R46****


My Mercedes vehicle, which is campervan base, has done 44K faultless miles with regular servicing. In its life, on three occasions, it has been in very long slow traffic jams of over 2 hours. Immediately after these jams the vehicle seems to have lost its power and feels as if it is running at about 75%. After either stopping for a few hours, or driving very briskly, it recovers its full power.

My question is: Does the engine management recognise driving style and circumstance and the need for less power and automatically remap the engine's output to suit?

The vehicle has been regularly serviced. It does not need a new air filter or fuel filter. The engine management light is "off". There are no fault codes showing. There are neither stored fault codes nor impending fault codes. This engine does not have an EGR valve and to my knowledge a particle filter is not fitted.

Any views would be helpful.

After a bit more reading I think it might be a sticking turbo actuator lever. Any comments from the pundits out there?

Mercedes tell me that the engine management is not adaptive to driving style, so I have to assume it is a fault of some type. I am now more convinced that it is a sticking turbo actuating lever, although it is free at present. Are there any recommended fuel additives to combat vane sticking in the turbo and if so are they effective?

does this happen during the day or at night,the reason i ask is when i used to work at a mercedes commercial dealership,we had som sprinters come in with lack of power but only at night,it turned out that someone had replaced brake light bulbs with the wrong ones or had got them in the wrong way,so when the lights were on the actual brake lights were on and the vehicle sensed this and cut the fuel.

So far it has only happened in daylight. I am aware that with the brakes on the engine revs are limited. I have also thought that it might be a vacuum loss in the system as a result there is insufficient draw to activate the lever that changes vane direction in the turbo, but I can't find any loose pipes. However, so far it is linked to long periods in a traffic queue that's why I think it might be carbon build up. The loss has occurred twice at sea level and once a few hundred metres above. I also need to say that the vehicle does not have a MAF.

Could this perhaps be plugged into Star at an independent specialist? The vehicle will have logged its reason for showing the eml and will then tell you what it thinks is the problem. Somewhere around £50 would cover it is have thought?

I have an OBD II code reader which shows no fault codes in any form. Hence the mystery.

So do I, and mine doesn't see everything, pending stored active and reset - for no apparent reason!
