Hi,
I have had a noisy power steering pump for some time now.
The noise is like a loose bearing which changes when the steering is moved or the engine is put on load.
I replaced the belt and the pulleys just to make sure it was the pump, as this was a cheaper option. But the whyning was still happening. I purchased a new pump the other day and replaced it. Refilled the header tank and started the engine. Then put the steering from lock to lock to try to bleed the system.
But the whyning is still there. I have checked the pipes going to the rack and they appear ok, no kinks. Another issue is that the fluid is now very airrated.
Could there be issues with the rack?
Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks

It would appear that you have an airlock somewhere in your system..which is allowing the pump to run dry..try a full lock with engine running and see if u can add more fluid

Do these pumps have an integral reservoir and filter?

The reason I ask is that if the inlet pressure is too low, hydraulic pumps can suffer cavitation and become very noisy.

Hi thanks for the replies.
I have put the steering from lock to lock to try and clear the air lock.
As a last resort last night i fitted the old pump unit and all worked ok except the obvious bearing movement. So looks like a faulty new pump.
I have spoken to the supplier of the pump this morning and they are sending me another manufacturers unit and some more fluid free of charge. Hopefully will be here tomorrow.

thanks
