OK - got some help with diagnosing the problem

Compression test showed cylinder 1 around 280 cylinder 2 around 150 cylinder 3 0 cylinder 4 around 150

Took the rocker cover off and a valve on cylinder 3 is bent and the head damaged.

With no compression in cylinder 3 I guess there could be a hole in the piston!

Conclusion, beyond economical repair and I need a new engine or van.

Mercedes sprinter 2002 uphill problem

Hi all I'm having trouble with my 2002 mercedes sprinter 313cdi! The van starts and will run fine and will get to 75mph on a flat motorway! Going uphill the van struggles!a lot! It just doesn't have any pull in it and will slow right down to about 35/40mph! I've had a mercedes mechanic look at the van and he changed the big turbo hose as it had a hole in it! This did improve performance on the flat but the van is still sluggish going uphill! I could understand the van being so slow uphill if it was carrying a lot of weight but it doesn't carry weight! Just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance
