Sprinter 316 cdi 2006 Sprintshift
Hello All,

We just bought a campervan based on 316CDI MWB Chassis and the infamous Sprintshift Semi-Automatic Gearbox. The van has 27K miles on the clock.Everything seems to be OK (touch wood ).
Going thru the service history - Mercedes recommends that the 716.6 Sprintshift needs an oil change every 10 years. I am near Lincoln so duly popped into the Local ( commercial ) Dealer and asked for a quote. The price ( inc vat ) quoted for the oil change was £455. Is this to be expected ? They quoted for 3 hours Labour + parts.

Any other preventative maintenance jobs I need to get done on the van ( particularly in relation to Sprintshift ) ? Anyone know of independent merc specialist who is familiar with Sprintshift system ? I am near Lincoln but willing to travel.

Thank You all in advance for your advice
Tom

There's an Indy that does trucks and light commercials on outer circle road in Lincoln but I forget their name now, worth getting a quote from them as well.
I use an Indy in Nottingham, MB Centre, if you dont mind travelling a little then give them a call for a quote

Welcome to the forum by the way, we need pics of the new ride or we might not believe you have it ;)

Maybe give Alex Crow Mercedes in Stowmarket Suffolk a ring for advice . He is very well respected (not just by me) . Not sure if he could undertake commercial stuff but that quote does sound on the high side ??

Thank you V6Matty :). Could the one on Outer Circle Road be S&P Garages ? If so, I will get a quote from them. I don't mind travelling so will give MB Centre in Nottingham a go too.

Having spoken to a couple of Merc ( commercial ) dealers within the last week they don't seem to be familiar with the Sprintshift System - that got me worried. If it is as caprcious as I believe it could be I would be comfortable for someone who is familiar with it to service it. Just my thoughts. here is a pic of the van :). sprinter 316cdi.png

Yes S&P are the ones I was thinking about, I only used them once in the past but they were good in diagnosing a O2 sensor that another garage said I needed a new turbo, I'd use them again if I worked hat direction but I'm just as impressed with MB Centre so I guess it's up to you who you'd go with,

Like the blue on that, looks like it will last a while too

I certainly hope so. We are planning taking her on the NC500 soon hence eager to get the Sprintshift box serviced. The box seems to be the weakest link in an otherwise solid van.

Any suggestions on spares that I could / should carry please ?

We had the 312d based Hymer for a few years before this and that was ultra reliable. I hear that the 316cdi has far too many sensors that could trigger a limp mode :).

Thanks Again
Tom

In Sprinters - Sprinshift was phased out either in 2005 or 2006 - hence - I guess it is a bit tricky to find mercedes dealers who are familiar with servicing / repairing of the Gearbox. Last week our Local cmmercial mercedes Dealer said that there are not too many Sprintshift sprinters on the road but they do look after a couple of vans. :( .

I think the surviving sprintshifts are perhaps the ones that do relatively low mileage ( mainly camper vans and motorhomes ).
