Sounds like there's something wrong with the tensioner to me. At full lock your power steering pump will load up and require more force to turn the pulley.

Hello and welcome it would seem the the belt is not tight enough or the tensioner device is not set up correctly

OR, as i found out,the alternator has a clutch type arrangement on the pulley wheel and when its knackered it causes the squeeling noise and also adds another noise when the car is first started cold but goes away once warmed up a bit.

thanks for the replies, could something have been knocked out of place when fitting the new belt? because everything was ok before it was changed, the garaged reckon it is the alternator pulley but it squeels only when on full lock whether hot or cold

when the alternator pulley is on its way out the belt will only make a noise when on full lock.
when the car is cold have a look at the belt with engine running and see if it jumps about all over the place, if it does then its probably the pulley/clutch thingy..

you will need a special spline tool to undo the pulley. also the pulleys can become extremely tight in operation and need a great deal of force to undo.

at least you have the 220 which allows reasonable access. the 270 c-class is no fun at all.

The squeal is from the belt, so the problem is with the belt.

If the alternator pulley running out of true,, then this cam make it squeal
