My recently acquired 2008 B180CDI squeaks during tickover. The frequency seems related to the engine rpm. It's more noticeable at cold start, but can sometimes be heard when warmed-up and standing in traffic at tickover speeds. Noise disappears above about 1200rpm. Can I cure it? Is it indicative of a BIG problem? What's my next move please?

I doubt very much if anything big,,, you can use a long screwdriver with the blade on each component in turn and the handle to your ear like a stethoscope but be very careful of any moving parts as they could pull the driver from your hand, it could be the idler, possible water pump but the idler is the most common where a little oil can be applied

As above it sounds much like a squeak from the belt train
