South Korean manufacturer Ssangyong has filed for bankruptcy in its home country.

Would a 7 year warranty be there in 7 years?

It could be worse...it is still relatively recent that new cars in the UK only came with a ridiculously short 1 year warranty.
My first brand new car, a Ford Orion in 1989 only had a standard base warranty of 1 year.
Japanese cars forced the move for all to start offering 3 years.
I remember a strange situation when one Ford model came with a 3 year warranty while the rest of the range only had 1. This was the Maverick and the reason being that it was joint venture with Nissan and their Terrano badged model had a 3 year warranty.

Nobody would lease a car if the warranty was only one year, maybe leasing will be extended to six years in the future and manufacturers would be forced to follow suit with the warranty. There really wouldn’t be much point in owning a car if that was the case - all down to volume and costs

MB and others give only 3 years because they can. And they rub the punter's nose in it with a quite mean "badwill" policy! Even Dacia offers 3 years/60,000 miles!

I bought a new Austin 1300 in Germany tax free in 1972 only had a 6 month warranty. I spent the first 6 months in UK on a course, then went back to Germany for 4 months. 11 months old back in UK the idler gear bearing failed, BL would not contribute towards the repair.

With some of the British cars of that era I'm surprised that they offered any warranty:rolleyes:

Not sure what warranties are on offer in UK but here in Oz, we have one manufacturer - Mitsubishi - now offering 10 years. Kia has been doing 7 years for quite a while.

Ssangyong have it right they ridiculously over price there cars, we walked past a garage last night and there was a hatchback for 32k the cars probably worth 20k and then you have 12k for the warranty. Very unlikely it will cost that in repairs in 7 years also is there a one owner warranty clause? Not sure

I think the majority of manufacturers overprice their cars, MB included. Presumably the reason for a lowly 3 year warranty is to do with how confident a manufacturer is with their products reliability.

Well if you look at all the problems modern stuff tends to have in a rather short space of time, its not in the interest to offer longer warranties. Secondly with all the aftermarket warranty companies around, so can be easily fobbed off to punters. Shorter warranties also help to keep the motor trade turning over as people think their vehicle will suddenly turn into a pile of bits. Also with brands such as Audi/BMW/Merc/Land Rover, most people will want them regardless for image will just keep opting for them repeatedly even if they experience severe issues.

To offer a substantial warranty, you need to make a car VERY well in the first instance which, costs a few quid and means the accountants need to let the engineers do their jobs rather than force them to do what they can with a 50p budget.

I recall Kia offering the 7 year warranty donkey's of years ago. About 22 years ago, a colleague of mine at the time traded his Corsa GSI in for a very sorry looking Kia (can't recall the model). Whilst is a was a nasty car back then, it didn't have any issues in the 5 years he kept and abused it. Kia has come a long way over the years and I really rate what they did with the Cee'd.
